Wait (Stream of Consciousness Writing)

You wait outside the school building as rain begins to fall. It falls and falls and falls, so that your eyes can’t make out the shadows of the playground and the road through fogged steam. The fog spreads out before you, like a thick spider’s web. The grass is long, uncut, and you forgot your coat this morning. Your family has never owned an umbrella. You wait on the sidewalk, unable to move in the dark. The sun has already set and you’re afraid to make any noise.

It feels like hours have gone by. The wind begins to pick up. Dad said he'll pick you up today but no cars drive by. The road in front of you goes on for miles. It intimidates you and the concrete makes you too afraid to start following it into the bus station. The wind works against you too, mugging you of breath. So you stay on the sidewalk because dad will show up soon. He has too. But he takes hours and hours and hours. He takes so long that you turn to cold withered bones on the paving stones.

He missed the sun coming up and he was too late to say sorry.
