Pets in the house
Owning a furry or a feathered pet in your household can be a rewarding experience. A well-chosen pet can help your kids to learn life lessons, to be more responsible, and in the same time, they learn how to care for another living creature.
A pet in the family brings both joy and fun! But is your kid mature enough for being a pet-owner?
Is your household suitable for a pet? If yes, how should you choose a pet?
We gathered some issues, questions to think about before choosing the right pet.
Space
First of all you really have to think about available free space for your pet - will you keep it indoors or at the backyard? Do you have the right fence in your backyard?
If you rent your home, will your landlord give you the permission to keep a pet in the house? Finally: how much free space will you need for your new friend?
Time
Do you or your family have enough free time to take care of the new family member? Do you work long hours which can impact your care for your pet? Some pets get very lonely by themselves. You need devotion to care for your pet beyond the first few weeks, when you find the situation new and interesting. In addition: does your family travel a lot? In case you go on holidays, can you get someone to feed your pet while you are away?
Money
Annual costs for pets can reach 500 dollars per year or more. You have to buy appropriate food, you will have medical expenses and you have to think about a health insurance and even toys and treats. Some pets need to be trained, which is another possibility for spending money. Can you spare this money?
Allergies
Some pets may cause allergic reactions, so you need to take this into consideration. This is mostly true for pets with lots of fur.
Maturity
Kids love the idea of owning a pet, but almost all the animals need time, devotion, responsibility from the owner. Think it over, if your kids are mature enough for such kind of experience. Some pets get ill, when they need special circumstances, or even they may pass away, how will your kids handle such an event?
