July 17, 2019 - Greater Pewee (Contopus pertinax)

These tyrant flycatchers are found in parts of the southwestern United States, Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Foraging from exposed perches, they feed mostly on insects, as well as some fruit during the winter. Breeding between May and July, they build cup-shaped nests from grass, bark, spiderwebs, lichen, and other materials. Pairs aggressively defend their nests, even chasing off larger birds and mammals. Both parents probably feed the chicks.
