«In 1997, Karl Bollenbeck describes how in the course of the first 20 years after World War II, architects dealt with concrete and stone as building materials: "Both methods of building remained unforgotten when they ran out of rubble stones. And when rooms began to undergo a gradual change as regards their construction and structure, whereby a free execution of the wall demanded material properties rubble stones could not deliver, people recollected reinforced concrete and the forceful visual creations by [Karl] Moser and [Auguste] Perret. After World War II, the message 'come hell or high water' was interpreted as an analogy for survival; in the early 1950s the concept was expressed in the use of reinforced concrete and expanded on to create visions of extreme lightness and transcendence. Yet simultaneously the experience of the 'telling walls' and the concrete contained within, and which was layered by chance, also remained as a visual option. Now the strong impression of the expanse of ruins and the first reconstruction could be addressed as a topic."» by Ulrich Krings.
