Snake: Circus Performer to Manor Footman
Note: I have had this maskedtalk in my notes for almost 2 weeks, because I wasnt sure what exactly it was I was trying to write about. Of course I had started with the idea of writing about Snake’s character growth, but I couldn’t figure out how to word it. Well, last night I figured out where I was going wrong. So without further wait, here is Snake: Circus Performer to Manor Footman.
As we all know Snake’s character has always been shy throughout his entire existence in the manga, and the anime. When we observe his standoffish attitude toward other humans, we really get to see this part of him. Even Joker noted at one point that Snake and his friends are shy. Overtime we do get to see this. We start out by seeing that he doesn't often talk as himself, but as one of his many companions he keeps around him. His snakes are oftentimes bold, and speak what's on their mind regardless of how it's going to be perceived. We occasionally see Snake scolding them for such behavior, such as when Emily was hitting on Dagger. Other then that there isn’t alot of his own personality shining through. I can’t say for sure that he even smiled once in the Book of Circus. If he didnt, he may have had a good reason.
Snakes (reptiles) are rather good trackers. They have increased sight, hearing, and they can feel vibrations. So Snake’s snakes would have known that the first string circus members were leaving in the middle of the night, and were returning by morning. They would know that they were doing their best to be sneaky, and they never told Snake about what they were doing. This would leave Snake being suspicious. His suspicion added to the fact the first stringers continually stayed on to him to lock his snakes up, would leave him unable to fully trust them. He cared about them (we see this in the little clip in the Book of Murder), but he couldn’t fully trust them. Look how long it took him to bring forth the information concerning Smile. Even during this part Snake didn’t really express himself.
When Snake became a part of the Phantomhive household, he was still shy but over time he felt more trusting. Ciel may have lied to him about the Circus members, but he was up front with Snake in the other situations. Snake knew just as much as what the other staff knew (aside from Sebastian), and he was treated in the same manner as them.
He was also allowed to let his snakes run free- within reason. This made him feel fully accepted, and allowed him to be more expressive in his everyday actions. Which later led to him becoming trusting. Snake went from keeping to himself to being able to spend time with other humans without feeling afraid, or suspicious.

"Ah, hello..
welcome to the esteemed Phantomhive Manor, where you are always welcomed! Please, step inside. Have some tea! The only rule is that you leave all improper grammar outside! We wouldn't want Bocchan picking up any nasty habits!"
