How I'm coping with the impending final chapter of @aleteia-ff 's Phantom Of the Arena.
This is a moodboard. Feel free to add on.
For Phantom Appreciation Day to celebrate the end of Phantom of the Arena, I made a PotA-inspired mask (phantom-esque). On the viewer's right are hand-laid black sequins that look like dragon scales for Toothless. It's lined with turquoise glitter for Astrid and Stormfly. The viewer's left shows Hiccup's descent into become the Phantom. There flames not only represent the burns on the right side of his face, but his desire to watch Berk burn. The Phantom side is also splattered in blood. In the center and corners are iridescent dragon scale gem. They reminded me of Toothless and Hiccup's hardened exterior. Anyways, once the paint and glue dries, I will post a selfie of it on. Lots of love to @aleteia-ff for her amazing story!!!

Thank you all so much for your lovely responses to last chapter! I thought it was really interesting to do a full Stoick one for once, and it made me super happy to see how well it was received!
I am still adhering to my two-week schedule, but I am nevertheless really happy to be back with this one! And we’re back to Hiccstrid in it!

Summary: Dragons and Berk have been at war for generations; one year ago however, strange things started to happen during raids, which cannot possibly be the work of a dragon. Refusing to let her village be haunted by what they call the Phantom of the Arena, Astrid sets out to find the culprit.

How do you think PhantomHiccup would interact with CanonHiccup?
Honestly, that’s such an interesting question! And I think the answer would vary widely depending on when these two Hiccup’s would meet each other. Let’s take for instance Canoncup from between HTTYD2 and HTTYD3, and Phantomcup from before Snotlout and Ruffnut’s wedding to make things less… convoluted. Also, they’re roughly the same age.
We are dealing with two characters who live in very different worlds but who are at their core, the same. They are hard-working, dedicated, compassionate and incredibly caring to those they hold dear. Massive dorks who are looking for their place in the world. They both love Astrid - and finding out they are both dating the same girl, despite their differences, would probably amuse them. Where they differ is how their experiences have shaped them and who they were with.
On the one hand, we have Canoncup, who stayed on Berk, defeated the Red Death and brought peace to the Archipelago, striving to integrate dragons into society and looking for peaceful solutions to do so. Until Drago killed Stoick, and he suddenly lost his father and had to take on the mantle of chief.
On the other, we have Phantomcup, who fled Berk at fifteen and has gone through more than anyone should have to go through at that age, which has left him visibly and mentally scarred. The only positive relationship with a human he has is with Astrid, but he is very mistrusting and values dragons over people. Especially his dad, who is still alive in this universe.
Now if these two were ever to meet, I think they would describe to each other who they are and what their lives look like. Phantomcup would be very sceptical of the things Canoncup’s telling him, as he highly doubts true peace is possible. He’d call Canoncup naïve, blind to the truth, all of those things until he eventually realizes something, which makes his lips curl up into a cocky smirk. They don’t differ that much, just in their methods. Canoncup doesn’t truly trust humanity with dragons either, which is why he’s hoarding all of them on Berk and has to consistently fight people still. There are just more exceptions in his world than there are in Phantomcup’s.
Speaking of Berk’s dragon hive; Phantomcup will think it’s a terrible idea. Canoncup is making Berk an enormous target, and it’s unsustainable. Besides, Phantomcup has never seen a good Alpha so he doesn’t believe he exists, and would be very conflicted over the idea of Toothless being Alpha; he thinks that if it should be any dragon, Toothless is definitely the least likely to ever abuse the power that comes with that but he also knows that power is extremely corrupting. And being Alpha provides unlimited power, that can’t be fought against. Some part of him would fear that it might do to Toothless what the power he wields as being the Phantom has done to him - as a voice he continuously surpresses in the back of his head is certainly aware of this. Along with that, he thinks that if you’re continously bringing dragons back to Berk, which they wouldn’t naturally do unless the Alpha told them to, no matter how good they have it, it’s just a new form of captivity. And if Canoncup mentions the Hidden World, he’d tell him - just like canon!Astrid - to start looking for a real solution. He doesn’t believe the Hidden World exists.
Phantomcup’s solution would, of course, be to make sure that dragons can’t be hurt by people in any place they inhabit, or at least the Archipelago. Which includes fighting people continuously, or at least persuading them, and this is where Canoncup would give Phantomcup a piece of his mind. The way Phantomcup is treating people is not okay in his opinion, not at all, especially his dad. He’d tell Phantomcup that he was able to convince his dad that dragons are good and that he gave his life for him. And that he’d do anything to have just a minute with his father, and that Phantomcup should give him a chance.
Whether Phantomcup would listen to him, though? I don’t know… Especially after learning from Canoncup that in Canoncup’s reality, his mother abandoned him as a baby. So Phantomcup would learn from Canoncup that one parent might not be as bad as he thought, but that one parent is certainly a lot worse. In this mind, I’m not sure how those things would balance out. What I do know is that Phantomcup would fly to Valka’s Mountain first chance he got, to get an explanation about why his mother left him - and never thought him valuable enough to return. And he wouldn’t be even half as forgiving as Canoncup was…

Also, PSA: If all goes well, this Saturday I will be launching the first chapter of a new story. It’s not related to Phantom at all, but it is a HTTYD story. And I’m super excited! More news will follow here on my blog ^^

The Phantom of the Arena thought; Rise of the Guardians villain...!?
I was just typing a reply to a lovely comment I got on AO3 on the latest chapter of The Phantom of the Arena. In this reply, I refer to Phantomcup as “the monster under people’s beds”... Which got me thinking that Hiccup at this point is basically Berk’s Boogeyman... Which led to the following: wouldn’t Phantom!Hiccup make a perfect Rise of the Guardians/Guardians of Childhood villain!?
I’m talking mainly character-wise here; sure, he’s not just scaring the children on Berk, but mainly the adults; in a way, that is even smarter however, as adults tend to pass on their fears to children... Fear is Phantomcup’s main weapon... Looking at Pitch Black, the villain from the original movie, fear seems to be a good theme for the Guardians’ villains.
I smell crossover potential. I smell enemies-to-lovers villain-redemption(?)-arc Hijack potential. Where that would leave Astrid, I don’t know - let’s not pretend I’ve got more of a plot idea than the few lines in this post the moment. Perhaps it’s an alternate reality? I also don’t know what would drive Hiccup to go as far as Pitch did in ROTG. (Isn’t Toothless also hella scary, to those who don’t know what a lovable dragon he actually is!?)
But I do have to say I kind of dig the idea and I just had to vent it!
