Something that I always thought was a neat little detail in The Phantom of The Opera (notibly in the musical, and the, I loathe to mention, 2004 film) was the use of black borders for The Phantom's letters and envelopes.

While I don't doubt there was probably a bit of 'he's dark and mysterious so let's make his letters the same' in the design choice, they replicate the look of Victorian mourning letters. During that era, expressions of sorrow over death had 'rules'; black attire and accoutrement were popularised and pretty much expected (especially for women) when someone passed away. One such common thing to use during such a time was, as afformentioned, mourning letters. Quite basically, when a person had a family, friend etc. pass away, it was customary for them to symbolise their bereavement with black borders on their letters and envelopes in order to, obviously, make people aware they were grieving.

And, I just think that's very fitting for his character. Constantly lamenting over what he could've been and making sure everybody knows it.
