The Phantom Shot
I think we’ve all heard a scary story as a child that we still think about, even though we realize it probably never happened. The one that stands out in my mind was told to me at a scout retreat twenty years ago.
One of the other Cub Scouts said this happened to his half-brother (or some other relative who I conveniently never met). The two of them were walking through a forest with a third relative or friend. It was probably at night, because that’s when things like this always happen.
Suddenly, one of them felt something rushing through the air next to his head, and heard a faint whooshing sound. An instant later, a scream filled the air. One of the boys was missing a finger. It had been sheared clean off, and the wound had been cauterized instantly, without a drop of blood spilled.
No one heard a shot being fired or saw a projectile or streak of light. An exhaustive search failed to turn up the missing finger or any trace of what took it off.
I went to junior high and high school with the kid who told me the story. I felt too silly to ever ask him if it really happened.
