Spooky babies.....
hot take cause I just saw someone suggest that gem genes are based on predicted popularity so staff will profit more, and people have been throwing around that it has to do with shininess or some other visual qualifier, here's what I think it likely actually comes down to
Gem genes are themed to be fancy and expensive. That's the only reason why a gene named Pharoah and its pair are gem genes. I don't think they would bother attempting to predict what genes are popular, and I don't think there's any hard and fast rules internally!
I'm guessing periodically the time comes around that they need to conceptualize a gem gene. Something abt "Pharaohs have a vibe right?" gets thrown around cause pharaohs are associated with gold and treasure, and an artist designs what they think a pharaoh gene would look like. It's a gem gene bc it's kinda themed a certain way and it was time to release a gem gene.
Early on in the game, fancy and expensive meant doing something genuinely special and limited with irishim, but since then a lovely, wide range of choices for everyone's price range have been introduced, which means the range of gem genes has expanded too.
I guess people are maybe arguing that there SHOULD be hard rules for what a gem gene is? Personally tho I dont see it mattering, especially since gem genes are fairly possible to save up for as a f2p player.
I like to read flight rising salt blogs when I wake up, it's like reading the newspaper
