Is it required for your daughter to join a sorority in college? I ask this because in the Middle East, sororities and fraternities don’t exist. We don’t even have clubs in college. What is a sorority/fraternities?
It's good to hear from you, my friend.
To answer your question, no, it is not required at all. Many students go through their entire university career without ever joining one. In the United States, sororities (for women) and fraternities (for men) are social organizations, often called Greek Life because they use Greek letters for their names.
While they are known for hosting social events and parties, they also focus on philanthropy, community service, and building professional networks that can help students find jobs after they graduate.
Members often live together in a large, private house owned by the organization. It is a very specific subculture of American college life, but again, it is completely optional.
Interestingly, there are also Honor Societies, which are different from social sororities. They are much more exclusive because you cannot just choose to join. You have to be invited based on having very high grades.
My daughter was actually just inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, which is the oldest and most prestigious academic honor society in the United States. Since only a small percentage of students are invited to join, it is a significant achievement that will look excellent on her resume when she starts applying for jobs. They even help with scholarships over here.
