Martha Nussbaum

During Women’s History month, we’ll highlight some of our recognizable members. 

Phi Beta Kappa member Martha Nussbaum is an American philosopher and the current Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law and Ethics at the University of Chicago, where she is jointly appointed in the law school and the philosophy department. She has a particular interest in ancient Greek and Roman philosophy, political philosophy, feminism, and ethics, including animal rights. She also holds associate appointments in classics, divinity, and political science, is a member of the Committee on Southern Asian Studies, and a board member of the Human Rights Program. She previously taught at Harvard and Brown, and was made an honorary member of Phi Beta Kappa at the University of Chicago in 2004.

Remembering Phi Beta Kappa member and poet Mary Oliver. She was inducted as an honorary member at Harvard University in 2003, when she spoke at the Phi Beta Kappa induction ceremony. Her poem, "A Walk Through the Graveyard," was published in The American Scholar's Winter, 1969-70 edition.

#PBKMember Catherine Schreiber (@cschreiberbway) is a two-time @TheTonyAwards winning Broadway producer, writer, and actress. Best known as a producer of #ClybournePark (2012) and the 2018 revival of @angelsbway, she was named the #Broadway Global Producer of the Year in 2017. She has received numerous awards, including six Tony nominations, four @olivierawards nominations, and an Evening Standard Award.
