The gang at the end of 1.02, "the Harvey"

Here's where I go crazy talking about Luke. It's not that I don't love the whole cast, it's that Luke inspires a particular sensation when you look at him. Anyway.

So the gang is hanging out with their loved ones, Phil and his husband, Susan and her mom, Auggie and his fifth daughter Zoey, but Luke starts and ends his end of episode sequence alone. He does see his dad and they talk and it's special, but there's something about the fact that his company is not permanent. Like, Luke doesn't seem to have friends, really, outside of the office, and he and Megan aren't together yet, and his only connection beyond that is the ghosts around him. But they aren't permanent company, and eventually he'll always be on the other side of the veil, there's just nothing for it. the last shot really emphasizes this I think. Luke turns out the lights and stands alone, just barely illuminated as he's dwarfed in the frame and absolutely surrounded by the dark and empty night. And yet he's still tossing his golf ball and catching it. Though there's this deeply lonely melancholy about him, but that's never all there is. Anyway, I find that montage and the episodes ultimate final shot being Luke all alone really interesting in contrast and a striking representation of what Luke has going on. therefore, these gifs in this order, a slightly more honest presentation might have included one of Luke and his dad, perhaps sandwiched between his arrival and departure, but this feels honest in it's own way.
