do NOT give this man gifts if thats ur love language. or do, but just be warned. he will use or wear whatever you give him until it becomes a hazard.

you got him flowers one time and he wouldn't throw them away until brim got mad and threw them out for him bc they were so so dead.

also in the same vein, he has a t-shirt you got him that's been worn so many times its decrepit. im talking about goodwill would not take it and he refuses to throw it out simply because you got it for him.

contrary to popular belief, he's not a constant supply of energy and will occasionally power down for a bit, but he likes to just.. exist with you. playing video games, reading a book, taking a nap, he doesn't care. he just wants to be around somewhere.

i've said this before somewhere but i do believe he has some sort of control over his body temperature -- not to an unhealthy extent, but he'll definitely be a heating pad or a space heater when you need him to be.

on the contrary, his abilities do go a little... haywire when he's any sort of emotionally unstable. that includes whenever you fluster him. some of his shirts and jackets have fallen victim to your compliments.

definitely a words of affirmation guy, but thats a given to an extent. whats not so much of a given is the gift-giving.

mention one time in passing that you want something and he'll get it for you, no questions asked. you wanted that shirt, but didn't say what color? he's buying you all of them.

he's also a touchy guy but not necessarily in an overly affectionate way, more so just a 'i want to be close' way. usually, that just looks like him throwing an arm over the back of the couch when you're next to him, or sitting so that his leg touches yours at dinner, or standing close enough that your hands barely touch at debriefs.

also a dog person but if ur not he can compromise by gasping over-dramatically and pointing at all the dogs in public when you're out together sigh

Viper doesn’t usually let anybody touch her weapons and utilities; however, when she finds herself in the predicament between only having ten minutes left until they left for the mission and twenty gas bombs to be filled, she unwillingly lets you help her out. though, as she watches your skilled hands handle her equipment so tenderly and gently, as if you knew how important it was to her, she couldn’t help but feel a slight spark light up in her chest. her eyes quickly flicker to your face to see if you noticed her minimal change in demeanor, but when she sees you furrowing your eyebrows in concentration with a slightly pouted mouth, she concentrates on the next gas bombs at hand instead. after this incident, you become the only person allowed in her lab whenever she needs some extra two pair of hands.

‘his’ garden

I headcanon yoru to have a little garden on the hq grounds that he doesn’t keep (of course), but is still his quiet place where he comes to rest and be alone. when he finds you sitting there for the first time, he becomes irrationally irritated, telling you harshly to leave and to not touch ‘his’ place again. when he sees your hurt expression before you walk away, he feels a slight sting in his heart. after all, you hadn’t done anything wrong; hell, you probably were just resting for a bit without even knowing yoru liked to have this place by himself. his ego definitely wouldn’t let him apologize but he does tell you sometime after that you could go there if you ever wanted to. will probably avoid stopping by after he tells you though because he’s a little scaredy cat.

his wounds

After being particularly scratched up after a fight, the whole team is being healed by sage which leaves you, one of the first ones to be completely bandaged up, to help her out. as she tends to skye, you are in the midst of desanitizing phoenix’ wounds when he lets out a quiet hiss. you quickly say sorry, flashing him an apologetic smile as you continue with the cotton pad. phoenix just nods, fixing his attention on your face to distract him from his burning (haha) pain. all of a sudden he feels the weird urge to embrace you; so he does, leaving you completely frozen still as you try to cope with what was happening. when confronted with it later, phoenix simply blames it on the mission and all of the pressure that was falling off of him at that moment. but you both know it was something else.

Remember how i mentioned yoru’s garden earlier? well the one who actually tends to it is - to no one’s surprise - sage !!

so when you take interest in her work in the garden for the first time and ask her to show you around, she catches a glimpse of you smelling a lily up close. when you notice her staring you laugh, which sends a pang right through her chest and she can’t help but blush. before you can ask her what’s wrong, yoru comes around the corner, freezing in his steps when he sees the both of you. hurriedly, you guys leave since sage has already told you about yoru’s situation.

When you ask her to teach you how to spin your knife like she does, she can’t help but admire the agility and flexibility of your hands which is the key point to knowing how to handle a knife efficiently. without her even realizing it, a whole morning has gone by and you guys have to leave for your mission. when you grab your gun, you also put jett’s knife that you were practicing with in your pocket. when jett spots you spinning it nervously on the battle field later, all she can think about is getting you safely out of here so she could teach you some more knife tricks.

omen

comforting silence

I imagine omen to be someone who values his silence and being left alone a lot, which started as being his involuntary state but is now his preferred way of being. so when he takes off to the far right corner of the room to knit and you come in, he expects to have to disappear. feeling a shift in energy, you spot him sitting there, tense, as if already in the process of leaving the room. you smile, happy, since you’ve never gotten to be in the same room as him for a longer time than five seconds. you have no urge to speak to him since you just want to sit down and read your book; so you do exactly that. unsure on how to proceed in this scenario, omen just stays still, not moving until you have completely settled into your chair. omen watches your face silently as you open the first pages of your book, shifting to get more comfortable and he feels himself relax more and more, guiding his attention back to his knitting. about half an hour into his activity, he looks up and finds you asleep. if you had been awake, you probably could’ve heard the shadow’s heartbeat, as he carries you to your room, leaving his newly knitted scarf next to you on your pillow.

You’ve had this conversation with Natasha many times before. You were leaning against your kitchen table with your arms folded tightly across your chest, Natasha mirroring your stance and leaning against the kitchen counter.

“I just worry, Nat. The uncertainty of it all, I mean… c’ mon. Can’t you see what this is like for me?”

It went like it always did. It was a stand off in your kitchen, late at night once Natasha was home and disclosed the possibility of another deployment and perhaps, a squadron mission. The weight of Natasha’s words never lulled and the blow to your gut never softened.

You wanted to be there for Nat, your Tash. You wanted to console her, ask how she was, ask what was next, but your deep fear of the unknown and being left alone in the world always bubbled to the surface first.

“For you? You don’t think I can’t see how this eats you up? You don’t think I care?” Natasha’s voice raised an octave higher. She would never shout at you, but her frustration was creeping through. “I will always care about you. I think about you every time I’m up in that sky.”

It was at this point that Natasha raised her arm to figuratively point towards the sky with her hand and you flinched away in a split second. Your body instinctively retreated into muscle memory and your brain went into auto drive. You turned away from her, feeling the tears sting the corners of your eyes.

A beat of deafening silence clouded your dimly lit kitchen. “Fuck-” Natasha breathed out, her eyes going wide, with panic clouding her normally bright and fiery gaze. “Baby? I’m so sorry, are you okay?” She reached out to place her hand on the table in your view, to tell you she was there but wouldn’t overstep anything if you didn’t want it right now. “I- I didn’t mean to. You know I would never.”

Natasha was aware of your past and she had done the most to help you. You know she didn’t mean it intentionally. “Just the heat of it all and you-” You motioned Natasha’s previous movements. “I’m sorry.”

You turned back to face her and Natasha could read your body language from years of learning you. She understood she could now bridge that gap and she gently placed her hands on your arms and gave them a light, reassuring squeeze.

“You never have to apologise. I am sorry.” She paused fleetingly as you met her eyes. “This whole situation is shit, but I never want you to think that I don’t think about you. Every time I see a sunset or sunrise when I’m flying, I always think of you. We’ll work this out, like we always do. Okay, my dove?”

You nodded. “Can we talk about this tomorrow, Tash? I’m so tired. I can’t think straight.”

“Of course, baby. Honestly, me neither. They got us flying the most God awful routes today. For the first time in five years I thought I was gon’ puke.”

You let out a small laugh with Natasha for the first time this evening. You leaned in and pressed a gentle kiss to her lips and she pulled you closer, smiling against you. “C’ mon. I want to kiss my sweet girl in bed.”

wc 368, domestic fluff, phoenix falls asleep at his desk. you wake him. quiet happiness.

“Honey, wake up.” You gently shake Phoenix’s shoulder, and are greeted by a groggy smile.

“Hmgbvdf… goo’ mor’…” He manages to mumble out, eyes slowly cracking open from his position, head in his arms on the desk.

“Phoenix… did you stay up doing work again?”

It’s a rhetorical question, really, as the evidence is scattered all around him. Peeling himself off the desk, he offers you an apologetic smile.

“I just had a lot of testimonies to comb through. Figured I might as well get them done when I could.”

Moving forward, you run a gentle hand through his tousled hair - he must have been stressed for it to have become this much of a mess when he didn’t even sleep in a bed.

“… Was it the insomnia again?”

“…”

Phoenix looks down for a moment, then reaches out to hug your waist, pulling you closer. You continue to pet his head, fingers teasing apart stray tangles in his hair. He nods silently against your stomach, and you take a deep breath in, out.

“You know I’ll always be here, right?”

He leans back to meet your gaze with a soft smile. “And you know you’re too good for me, right?”

You ruffle his hair and snort. “Don’t make me argue with you over that again. You might be the lawyer but that is a fight I won’t back down from.”

Phoenix laughs, a full-bodied sound of delight that makes your heart swell. “I could never win against you, dear.”

“Then tell me when you can’t sleep, alright? And we can chase away all those thoughts together.”

Bending down, you drop a tender kiss on his forehead. He takes the opportunity to literally sweep you off your feet, tugging you into his lap.

“Phoenix!”

You scold him for taking you by surprise, lightly slapping his arm, but your giggling eliminates any kind of sternness from your tone. He chortles, shoulders shaking with mirth, and presses a kiss to your cheek.

“Thank you, always.” You don’t miss the sincerity in his gaze.

“For you, always.” Reaching up to cup his face in your hands, you let your eyes close as he leans in, lips finding yours with a quiet smile.

Hot Chocolate

It's a draft sliding between your sheets that wakes up in the middle of the night. You roll over, trying to tug your wife closer, but when you try to pull her arm around her waist, you don’t feel anything but the rumpled sheets of your bed. You sit up, yawning and brushing your hair away from where it’s stuck to your face. There's a cold spot on the bed where your wife should be, and a flash of light directs your attention to the windows. Rain is pouring down outside, rattling the windows and lightning lights up the night sky in jagged bursts. Tasha probably woke up and went to check on the kids. Your eldest, at five years old, has been going through a period where she’s scared of thunder and lightning. You slip your feet into your slippers and tug on Tasha's oversized cardigan before shuffling to the door.

It's silent in the upstairs hallway of the  house. As you peer into the nursery and your daughter's room, beds are empty. But you're not worried. You walk down the stairs to the kitchen, the one that Tasha had drooled over when you were pregnant the first time and insisted you buy the house for. As you approach the kitchen, you can see golden light spill out and hear music playing. It's just loud enough to drown out the rain but not so loud that you're unable to hear the baby's babbling or your daughter's giggling or Tasha's slightly off-key singing.

You can smell spices in the air as you lean your hip against the door jamb and watch the scene with a huge smile on your face. Tasha's hips are wiggling to the beat as she tangos with Elena, your eldest. She's wearing a pair of soft shorts and a loose Navy t-shirt. Maria, your youngest and the baby of your family, is lazily sipping on a bottle of your breastmilk and periodically letting out little squeals to join her Mom and sister.

It's Tash who sees you first, shimmying her way to you after setting the chocolate covered ladle down.

"Amor, why are you up?" Her voice is soft and fond as she sashays towards you. When she's close enough, she holds her hand out to you, wiggling her fingers while cha-cha-ing to the beat.

Your own grin is impossibly fond as you put your hand in hers smiling at the feeling of her skin-warm wedding ring against your hand as you do so.

"It was cold in bed.” You pout before continuing, “My personal heater went away." You shrug your shoulders as you say those words, grinning when she twirls you into a spin before meeting her for a kiss. It's soft and sweet, and it's made even sweeter with the cinnamon and chocolate on her tongue. Before either of you can take your kiss too far, a tiny hand tugs at the bottom of your shirt.

"Mama! Mama! D'stowm woke me up!"

You grab your big girl, picking her up and setting her against your hip. You press a kiss against her hair, still baby soft, but growing longer every day and wonder where the time went. You can still remember how her feet had felt batting a staccato rhythm against your ribs every day. And now she’s already five years old. 

“Yeah, Ellie?” Your voice is soft as you snuggle her. 

“Yeah, Mama. I woke Mommy up cause I was scawed.” She’s so proud of herself for coming to get one of you when she was scared. “An den when Mommy checked on Mawia she was ‘wake too. So we’s having a pawty in the kitchen.”

“A kitchen party, huh? What do you say, Miss Ellie? Is there room for Mama in your kitchen party?” Your smile is soft as you grin at your wife while Ellie thinks. Her little nose is scrunched and you can see a smear of chocolate across her cheek as you chronicle the emotions on her face. “So?” Your voice is wheedling as you tickle her tummy just a little. Ellie’s soft giggles turn into a huge smile as she launches herself into Tasha’s arms. “Yes, Mama. You can join! Mommy made hot choco! Like ‘Buela Ellie!”

“Like your Abuela Ellie?” You grin at your wife’s wink as she sets Ellie on the counter next to Maria and continues stirring the hot chocolate. 

“Did you help Mommy make the hot choco, Ellie?” You smile as you gather Maria into your arms,  the baby nuzzling up against your chest sleepily as her older sister chatters on about everything she remembers about making Tasha’s mom’s hot chocolate recipe. The elder Elena is one of your favorite people in the world. When your family had disowned you for falling in love with Natasha, she’d welcomed you into her arms and her family. She’s your Mama just as much as she is Tasha’s now. And she’s Ellie and Maria’s Abuela. She’d cried so hard when she’d met Ellie for the first time and you’d told her you’d named your baby girl after the only mother you knew. She’s your rock, forever and always.

You grin when Maria fists your sleep shirt, cooing, “Little miss, you’re up way past your bedtime, huh? Mama’s got you. Sleep, my darling. Sleep.” 

You’re rocking Maria, a gentle shuffling sway, when Tasha presses a kiss into your shoulder and pushes a mug to you. It’s the perfect temperature and as the spiced chocolate bursts sweetly across your tongue, you feel your heart swell. Tasha’s got Elena sipping on cooled chocolate from a sippy cup against her shoulder as her other arm is curled around your waist. It’s quiet in the golden glow of your kitchen lights. Tasha’s turned the speaker off and in the silence all you can hear is the rainstorm outside and the soft snuffling breaths of your daughters. The thunder and lightning have stopped, the rain easing in intensity until only the gentlest taps are heard on the windows. It’s not long before both your daughters are asleep. You’d shared your mug of chocolate with Tasha, the both of you sipping in turns as you’d rocked your babies to sleep. The cleanup is left for the next day as by tacit agreement you lay your girls to sleep and curl into each other back in your room.

“I love you, Amor.” You smile as you drag her closer, pressing a kiss into her collarbone.

“Love you, Tash.” Your own response is sleep-slurred and tender as you fall asleep in the arms of the woman you swore to spend your life with.
