Phoenix worms

Iroh finished up his order of 400 large phoenix worms from phoenixworm.com and today I ordered another 1,000. Expensive, but worth it, because he is doing very well and I've noticed they keep him better hydrated than the dubia. And best of all, they're not stinking, noisy, disgusting crickets.

I would like to try growing my own phoenix worms as they're stupidly easy to get your hands on. From what I understand they will appear if you just put out a compost bin. The nutritional breakdown is so darn good too. 

It's about time I did another dubia colony sorting to pull out the feeders and change out the egg crates. Ugh, not looking forward to that chore this weekend. I don't care about dealing with the bugs and they don't even really smell bad, but it's a pain in the butt to sort them by size even with the bucket method and I always worry I'm stressing out the adults and they won't breed as well. The good news is nearly all of my original bunch have matured to adulthood and the few left are big nymphs just a molt or two away from adulthood. They do seem to be breeding pretty well now, there were hundreds of babies in my colony when I checked last week. I just hate feeding off the really small dubia because it takes forever to give Iroh enough of them to fill him up.

Anybody reading this who's interested in raising a baby dragon: yes, they really are expensive to feed. I probably put as much money into starting the colony as I did into buying the cage setup, and it's only now, a full six months later, that they're established enough that I can start to feed daily from the colony. In the interim I've been buying dubia at $50/1,000 or thereabouts and the phoenix worms are $45/1,000. That will last maybe two weeks or so.

I just ordered 200 phoenix worms so hopefully they like those because they were expensive holy shit.
