Dealing with a little Festival Funk
When in between festivals, the downtime does kind of bring me down. It hit me a few days after Jazz Fest. I went on a big bike ride on the canal, relieved that I had time before the next slew of festivals. Then something didn't feel right. I love big bike rides but I wasn't enjoying this one. That feeling when if you're not photographing something then you don't think of yourself as a photographer. This happens to me like clockwork. My busy period is during the Spring/Summer until end of September but most of the year I have my day job and have the odd photo job now and then. When I have that small gap in between fests, I still feel like I should be photographing. It's the adjustment to catching up on sleep, not editing at weird hours, eating a home cooked meal (as I've mastered the art on inhaling hot dogs) and just being a regular person. Another case of Festival Funk. Yes, Festival Funk generally happens when covering or working festivals. It was something I was unable to figure out why I would get irritable after a festival until a few years ago I talked about it with another photographer with an even more hectic schedule. She would cover festivals abroad and for a longer period, she mentioned the burnout as well. Being in festival mode does take a lot out of someone, especially on the photo end. Not many people realized that it's both physically and mentally demanding. I had a bit of Festival Funk for a few days. I knew it was something I couldn't avoid. I wanted to keep busy but my body was feeling exhausted. I was trying to be as constructive, to cram in as much Summer as one can in Montreal but sometimes a night off doesn't hurt. I finally felt better a few days ago as I was hanging out in my kitchen, listening to jazz and cooking. I felt no pressure. I love to cook. I love to work on my balcony garden. Having these things keep the mind fresh and active. Just looking at other photographers photos keeps me mentally active for future assignments. Lately it's been keeping in touch with people, whether if it's in person, by text or Messenger. Communication has kept me in one piece this season. It's like a mind game, where you believe you need to be busy. I was busy regardless with a festival or without but going back to regular busy than photo busy is still an adjustment. It doesn't take my integrity away as a photographer if I'm not at it 24/7. Sometimes it's not a bad thing to have a night off. For myself, I need to find some kind of busy. Thinking the blog may work after all. I then wrote this after cooking after meal: I'll keep this in mind during the next round of festivals. In the meantime, I'll learn to enjoy the downtime. I only have a few days left.
I want to go take fall pictures but I have so much work to do at home.. But then again, I am currently laying in bed.
When ppl think any and all methodical planning is the product of my husband's brain bc he's the engineer and I'm just the artist and I wanna say "do you even know what percentage of my photoshoots are planning a session out and figuring out how all the different settings and nature should work together to create a pretty picture for you like I don't just press buttons and hope for the best" but really I'm just like ok then. I find this funny bc I've never had a job where I wasn't constantly trying to figure out a better method for completing my task than my predecessor did, and how I can make everything more efficient bc I'm a very lazy worker and the faster I can get things done correctly the better (bc I also like to be praised lol).
Really need a new camera upgrade but also need a new lens upgrade but I also need money for both of those things
Client: You did my newborn photos six months ago. I wanted a couple to be 5x5, but I think they're all 5x5 because the top and bottom are getting cut off when I try to print 4x6.
Me: Actually they're all 8x10 because that's the standard professional print size. 4x6 is wider than 8x10, so you just have to adjust the photo so only extra space gets cut off.
Client: Um, I know what I'm doing.
Me: ...how about you just email me which ones you want printed and I'll crop them for you?
I broke a camera with my face today. It was a Canon 7D and I faceplanted it. Now it won't connect to a laptop. And my face hurts.
