”What are you some kind of stalker?” “Yes.”
Chapter 1: “What are you, some kind of stalker?” “Yes.”
KK didn’t want to be as she was. Crippled by want, obsession. If you think about it, it was all Sarah’s fault. She had introduced them after all.
Sarah’s Apartment
Don’t get KK wrong she loved Azzi and Paige. But they were making her sick with their love. KK wasn’t bitter at all, rather just didn’t understand how someone could be that taken with another person. It made her gag at the thought of going mindless over another.
Paige had only been here for a week, WNBA off season made it the perfect time to visit her girlfriend and friends. Sarah thought it might be nice to introduce Paige to her new friends from school.
KK didn’t really know why or how Sarah made friends from the UConn woman’s softball team, but then again who was she to judge? Sarah spoke highly of her and she was one of the best judges of character KK knew. The doorbell rang breaking KK thoughts.
“Okay guys I need you all to be nice. Kayleigh’s cool but she’s a little shy at first.”
“Oh so you.” Paige joked. “Don’t worry Rah we’ll be nice.” Sarah rolled her eyes at the jab, opening the door to reveal what had to be an angel.
Wow, that has got to be the prettiest girl KK has ever seen. KK was normally below shallow compliments when it came to women, but this girl seemed to have taken all of the thoughts from KK’s mind simply by breathing, and she hadn’t a single clue what her fucking name was.
An ugly thing curled in her chest, it felt like possession. KK was known to share, she was giver at heart, all of Gods children should be. But this girl seemed to be an exception to that rule.
“KK.” Sarah’s voice snapped her out of the little trance she was in.
“Sorry, zoned out for a sec, practice put me through it.” She came up with the lie easy covering it in a charming smile. This was when she became a liar, a true sinner, as she reflected back on her spiral down.
“Put you through it? I could tell by how much you were running that mouth.“ Sarah joked.
“Anyways guys this is Kayleigh, call her K9 cause she got that dog in her.” Sarah wrapped an arm around Kayleigh’s shoulders pulling her into view. Kayleigh laughed and it made KK’s stomach tilt a little. Butterfly’s didn’t stand a chance to the feelings she brought KK with that laugh.
“Running joke on my team cause of my jersey. Please, just call me Kayleigh or Kay.” She tucked her hair behind her ear. A bashful gesture that seemed off. She didn’t radiate a natural shyness about her.
She had straightened her hair, KK noted. Probably today it looked new and shiny with health. Her nails weren’t pink or flashy either, they were short and clear coated. She was all clean looks. She very clearly put effort into herself, whether it was because she was meeting new people of not KK didn’t know.
Her ears held studs that on most seemed boring, but on her reflect perfect light onto her pale skin. Her skin was a perfect milky white, KK saved herself the embarrassment of creating allegories about the moon or stars.
“Nice to meet you, I’m Kamorea but call me KK or the GOAT.” Her handshake was firm despite her obvious nerves, Kayleigh laughed at the joke even if it wasn’t peak comedy. Her need to please was compartmentalized in KK’s head with a growing file.
Kayleigh’s hand was soft and her grip a perfect mix of friendliness and the slight pull of unfamiliarity. Everything she did felt perfect KK decided.
Their eyes meet and KK wanted to sink into them. Her eyes she had to snap away from quick, she forgoes waxing poetry about them, it would take too long, she would be here forever.
Her lashes were long and curled to perfect points. She very obviously had done them, seeing the near invisible joint of cluster and real, most wouldn’t see it but KK did. She didn’t wear much makeup, it only added to her newness. It made her look more precious, a word KK only had came to say ironically till now. Azzi ruined this little mental revelation with her small talk.
“Stupid works too, that’s what we call her. I’m Azzi nice to meet you.” She interrupted, pulling KK’s focus as she tugged Kayleigh into a light hug.
KK felt stupid for not hugging her first. She felt she had missed on an important collection of data. Although it did help in KK’s evaluation of her, surprisingly. Her clothes for a start, she was wearing a cropped slightly v’d black tank and black sweats that hung of her hips perfectly. KK hadn’t stared too long there…no not long at all…
She had obvious confidence in her body, not showing a shiver of uncomfortably at the skin of her stomach showing. Sarah might be wrong on her analysis of Kayleigh. Probably a projection or energy match when they first met since Sarah is so shy.
Paige took her turn hugging Kayleigh, her shoes lifting a little to reach up for her too, dunks, because the girl just had to have the perfect style in shoes and clothes of course.
KK slumped down on the corner of the couch hoping it gave natural instead of middle aged crisis. Kayleigh sat down on the couch giving KK exactly what she didn’t want, space. Bless her heart she really did want to make KK comfortable.
“So Kay tell us about yourself.” Paige asked settling in next to Azzi again. KK to stop herself from blurting say everything about yourself. She would find out later anyways, she had decided the moment she shook hands being normal about her wasn’t an option.
She wanted every detail, she wanted her unraveled, bare to KK alone not to anyone else. Surface level get to know you was the least of KK’s agenda.
“Well I’m from New York originally, my mom and dad played pro softball and baseball and so do both my brothers, Tyler and Corey they both older but somehow dumber.” This drew a laugh from everyone’s mouths. It also allowed KK to see her, humor to lighten tension, even if it was in her own head. Finally a common ground, a connection that she could exploit.
“So you must have a love for it for a while huh?” KK asked as casually as she could, Kayleigh turned slightly to her leaning back on the couch a little more. She had drawn her focus perfectly.
“Actually no, I wanted really bad to never touch a bat. I didn’t want to be in my parents and brother’s shadows so actually for a long time I played basketball.”
“Really?” Azzi questioned.
Oh, that, that changed some thoughts KK had decided about her. Allowed room for factual error was something KK needed to remember as she continued her investigation.
“Yeah it was my favorite sport I was pretty good too, but um, I tore my meniscus, it was a large tear where my meniscus met my joint so it was so much harder of a surgery. It was too much to come off of I couldn’t be as explosive as I was, so I started messing around with a softball again.” She smiled without sadness, seemingly okay with her tragic course of career path. They had something in common, basketball, an opening for closer future connection.
“I had absolutely nothing to do when I was recovering so I just sat or stood on my crutches and worked on pitching. My mom was soo mad when she saw I snuck out one night into the garage to practice. I know really she was secretly thrilled I took it up.”
“Wow I can’t imagine how hard that must have been. Me and Paige both tore our meniscus and ACL but it never…” Azzi trialed off sorry for the younger girl. Kayleigh’s face held no tension, her grace with the sympathy wasn’t self deprecating or accepting. It was perfect in its gratitude of Azzi but also firm in her denial of any pity parties.
“It’s all okay, I think it might have been a sign from God or something. I was like destine to be a pitcher and it doesn’t mean I can’t still hoop just not as fast or as much as I used to.”
“Kay we’re totally playing 1 v 1 soon!”
“Better bring it Rah I might be retired but I still got it.”
The rest of the night went in similarly, Sarah and Kayleigh having a laugh in between conversations and KK hanging on every word, breath, anything she did, cataloging it in her mind and later her journal. She learned when she was nervous she fixed her hair and licked her lips. The downside to the second was that now KK lost focus on her words and only felt a pull to press her lips against Kay’s. They were shiny in a near erotic way with spit and the remainder of her lipgloss. They looked so soft, she looked so soft and pliant.
KK shouldn’t be thinking these thoughts, it was sin, she knew it. It was a flurry of lust and greed and gluttony all at once. She was dizzy on her presence, drunk on her.
Slowly as the night wore on Kayleigh and shifted closer to her, naturally gravitating towards KK. It made her want to implode. Their shoulders and hips align, sides pressed into one another.
Another fact KK had learned about Kayleigh, she loved to be touching someone. She had noticed it from the second she arrived, a hand brushing Sarah’s shoulder or arms brushing another while sat, Kayleigh loved physical touch.
The fact was made even more evident when she laughed, she leaned in when she laughed, hunched over the lap of whoever was closest, KK being the lucky girl. KK laughed along only late by a second and brushed a hand on her back as she leaned with her.
Her touch on her legs felt like a dagger to her nerves. She had to repress all instincts to flinch, not out of hurt but pure heat being pushed from her core, through her finger tips at the action.
Everything about her seemed destined to tear KK apart, even her perfume hooked KK. There wasn’t much scent, it was lightly floral, it was warm like cooked spiced drinks. KK could sleep an eternity away wrapped in that smell. Even her hair smelled of it.
“Oh my goodness, it’s like 12:40, I should get going.” Kayleigh said standing and collecting her items.
“I’ll walk you to your car it’s way too dark and late to go solo.”
Kayleigh’s smile was bright as she responded to her.
“Thanks KK.” KK nearly melted at the sight directed at her. She would work however long to get the soft and open smile directed at her always. Realizing her lapse in response she did what she does best and covered it with humor.
“Girl boo don’t even mention it!”
She was gifted another smile.
The walk was quiet, filled with comfortability. The sudden silence should have felt jarring and held weight, but with Kayleigh it only felt good. Everything about her did. Kayleigh turned her back facing her car, a simple SUV in dark grey.
“Thanks again KK, you really didn’t have to.”
“Come on, like any of us were gonna let you walk alone.” She reached next to her hip and grabbed on the handle opening it slightly, allowing Kayleigh to sit down. She rolled down the window and KK leaned on the frame. She hoped she gave interest friend who cares about your well being, and not, creep asking for your number who might stalk you home. Though the last part might still be true depending on how much homework she had next meet up.
“Alright now get home safe, unfortunately we can’t escort you there and keep you safe from creeps.” Her voice lilted with a laugh. She was the creep, she hopes only slightly Kayleigh would catch on, feeling sorry already for her. Kayleigh only shook her head at her antics. She paused biting her lip lightly.
KK didn’t feel sorry anymore.
“See you tomorrow KK.”
“Bye Kay.” As she drove off KK knew one thing for sure. She would make Kayleigh hers even if it meant breaking Kayleigh to accomplish it. She should feel manic for wanting to hurt her like that, but she only felt a rush, this girl had her trapped entirely.
Huh, I guess Paige and Azzi weren’t so bad after all. And this is all Sarah’s fault.
So, I finally did it…. It’s a series but please don’t expect consistent updates!
