In 2007 I was fortunate enough to visit rural Kenya and a dozen or so schools. The desire of the children to learn was inspirational, in light of their extreme circumstances. The lives of children in rural Kenya are hard enough, and for these children even more so in light of their physical and mental challenges. In front of the camera however, they were themselves without reservation. The camera/lens combination was a Hasselblad 501CM/180mm, and the roll was exposed onto Fuji's brilliant Neopan Acros 100 using natural light. Now that a portfolio has enough images from each of the countries, it’s time to see how the public will react. This is a portrait of two friends living in a home for challenged children. Their portrait was made in collaboration with the home for challenged children, in order to further the home's work. We showed up early in the morning, and witnessed the children putting on the only uniform they possessed. Most of these children were discarded by their families, or hidden away from public view. The lives of children in rural Kenya are hard enough, and for these children even more so.
