Penina Spinka’s Picture Maker
Alrighty I’m a bit behind on these things, so this is me catching up.
Picture Maker is set on Turtle Island about a thousand years ago. Its story is similar to that of the Earth’s Children series in that it follows a young girl throughout her extraordinary life in prehistoric times.
Like Earth’s Children, Picture Maker is a history lesson as well as a good read. The information about the Ganeogaono, Algonquin, Naskapi, Inuit, and Norse peoples is thoroughly researched and some of the events are based on true parts of history.
The book explores the cultures and belief systems of these peoples as Picture Maker lives with all of them.
The book itself is really interesting and just easy to read - it’s a real page-turner. The events are exciting, the characters are well-written and the book has a pretty solid moral, which boils down to in the end, all you get is a grave so be nice to people while you’re alive.
I just found out there is a sequel so I will definitely be reading that.
