HERE COMES A SPECIAL BOY

With the search for the Dragon Balls concluded, Goku decides to take Master Roshi up on his offer to train. Goku swings by his house to pack, and then he flies to Kame House on his magic cloud. There’s like a two minute sequence of Goku just flying around all over the place, skimming lakes, weaving through mountains, etc. etc., and it’s really great, probably my favorite scene from the early episodes. It really gets across the idea that Kinto’un would be super-fun to ride.

Upon his arrival, Goku finds Roshi watching aerobics on TV, and Roshi sends him to the kitchen so he can watch his show in peace. Goku is astonished by the refrigerator, and I like the cute li’l penguin logo on the door.

Roshi insists that Goku must bring him a cute girl before any training will begin. I don’t know if Roshi forgot his invitation back in Episode 8, or maybe he only invited Goku because he assumed Goku would bring Bulma along with him. In any case, he wants a girl to harass, because Master Roshi belongs in jail.

But Goku has no idea how to fulfill this request. He can barely distinguish men and women as it is, and he has no idea what Roshi wants. I’m not really sure Roshi knows what he wants either. It seems to me there’d be easier ways to make this happen without involving Goku, but whatever.

Goku’s second attempt seems to go a little better, but when Roshi goes over to check her out, she turns out to be a mermaid. Ever the optimist, Roshi asks to see her boobs, and she hits him and swims away.

I’m not sure if this mermaid has a name or not. I always called her “Pie-pie”, but the shirt doesn’t necessarily mean anything. Krillin isn’t named “Tacos.” But Bulma is named “Bulma”, so maybe. I’d like to think all the mermaids in Dragon Ball are named by this convention. There should be a Cake-Cake, Tart-Tart, Donut-Donut, and Ho-Ho-Ho-Ho. Maybe not that last one.

While all of this is going on, we see Bulma’s group--Yamcha, Puar, and Oolong--stuck out in the middle of nowhere because their plane crashed before they could reach the city. At least twice, they nearly spot a SPECIAL BOY who is on his way to find Master Roshi’s island.

For some reason, I always thought the Bulma’s group gets lost plotline lasted a while, but it’s only this one episode, and while they seem to be in bad shape, the dialogue indicates that they’re never too far from civilization.

Anyway, Krillin finally makes it to Kame House and introduces himself as a prospective disciple. When Roshi turns him down, he offers a gift of dirty magazines, and Roshi realizes that Krillin can help Goku find that girl he wants so badly. The only trouble is that Krillin can’t ride the Flying Nimbus, because he has impure thoughts. In the manga, this is attributed to his goal of getting good at martial arts to attract girls. In the Japanese dub, I don’t think it really gets spelled out. In the Funimation Dub, he admits that he had more dirty magazines, and he was holding out on Roshi.

There’s a gag where Krillin accidentally slips in an all-male porno mag among the others. Look, say what you want, but Ho Mo has some really good articles. There’s one about building your own deck, for example. I rent, so I’d never actually build my own deck, but the article is just so well-written that it doesn’t matter.

I don’t really have a lot else to say here, but I took way more screencaps of Pie Pie than I needed, so I’ll just close off with those. They should have used her again somewhere. Like a filler episode or something. Just seems like a waste of a good character design...
