My husband wants to dress up as a wolf for Halloween. Which means my daughter ZJ get to be a little piggy. But weren't there 3 little piggies? And isn't ZJ an only child? Yes. And yes. However, the first two piggies get eaten due to using flimsy building materials. So my child is the last piggy standing. And this is the mask I made out of foam.
I wanted to make this out of felt, but the Craft Gods worked in my favor. There was not a single piece of pink felt anywhere at Walmart. And I wasn't going past Walmart, so foam was the next best thing. I actually think I did a much better job with it than I was ever going to do with felt material. I am seriously tooting my own horn here. Toot toot toot toot.....
I measured ZJ's face to make sure the eye holes would line up and the mask would cover her face. Then I sketched it out and taped it to a black piece of construction paper so I could have an idea of how it would look. I traced around a bottle cap to make the eye holes completely round, because I can't draw a circle to save my life.
I cut out two mask pieces because this foam has an adhesive backing. Once I cut out the eye holes and used the scrap pieces of foam for the ears, I peeled off the backing and sandwiched all the pieces together. I also used the eye circles to make the nose. I wanted to use every inch of that foam sheet. I stared at it in the craft aisle for 10 minutes. I was going to use EVERY INCH until there was nothing left.
Once all the pieces were put together I got some markers to fill in the details. Since I didn't have any light pink foam for the "inside" of the ears, I used a highlighter to color it in. And then I turned my back for a second. Never turn your back for a second when there's a three year old and markers within 2 feet of each other. She decided she wanted to help me color too, and scribbled on one side of the mask.
I thought it was ruined. I cursed the Craft God for letting me get so close to victory. Then my husband, wonderful man that he is, tells me to simply " do what ever she did on the other side to make it match." So I did. I colored in some rosy cheeks for my little piggy. And it was done. And the Craft Gods rejoiced. And I'm tooting my horn. Toot toot toot toot toot.
