-eventually realizing that some of his jokes make Hayden truly upset and not doing those (I dont like Ilya calling Hayden a bad husband or father, especially since in the books he doesn’t actually think that)

-coordinates Hayden coming to Ottawa for Shane

-sends “send this to someone who…” memes on social media but it’s all annoying ones with weird videos

-texts him constant Shane updates

-punches out Montreal member for calling him a traitor

#mypikanov friendship are frenemies in the same way as when you have two cats who lowkey can't stand each other but sometimes you will find them cuddled up on the couch together. they always manage to move before you can catch a picture of them being nice together. they are NEVER going to act like they like each other, but if some else is being mean to the other then fuck it they are getting in a FIGHT to defend him because no one else is allowed to be mean to MY enemy 😤

thinking fondly of my close personal friend ilya rozanov at this ungodly hour of 4 am. thinking of how he was such a sad boy for so much of his life. thinking of how his anger for others always arose so quickly, yet his anger for himself only ever manifested as disgust.

thinking of ilya and yuna hollander, of how ilya always maintains a veneer, no matter how thin, well into the timeline. he already has a mama. it is not her fault she cannot be here for him now, but he believes it evens out because he couldn't be there for her before.

thinking of ilya and david hollander, of how ilya cannot hold him at arm's length for too long because the kind of kindness that david radiates could piss on ilya's father's grave and grigori still wouldn't have a clue what it was.

thinking of ilya and cliff marleau, who scared ilya in his rookie year, although ilya would be hard-pressed to admit that. with his hulking frame and bear-like disposition, cliff reminded ilya of alexei so strongly that he couldn't breathe right for the first two weeks. then, cliff started to take ilya under his wing and over several early playoff exits and precious cup wins, ilya understood what it meant to have a brother; more importantly, he learned how to be one without wishing he didn't have to.

thinking of ilya and hayden pike, who was the second father that ilya saw being far better than his own. ilya, who had never once sat in his father's lap for any reason, sees a tiny arthur pike climb onto hayden's lap and spill hayden's hot coffee. ilya, inhaling sharply in the armchair, watches hayden scold the child lightly while carefully manoeuvring him with one hand so that he is safely away from the hot coffee that must be burning hayden's arm and thigh. thinking of ilya realising something small but something concrete upon witnessing how hayden kisses arthur's forehead and shoos him upstairs to tell his sisters something or the other. thinking of ilya's throat closing up as hayden waits until the child is out of sight before hissing out a string of curses, the russian versions of which ilya grew up hearing every day.

Some fans start shipping Hayden and Ilya in an enemies-to-lovers way, which puts both of them in the torment nexus and Shane in the Time To Choose Violence >:D nexus. Most people call their ship name "Pikanov", but Shane is so proud of himself when he pretends to ponder if maybe "Hay-Ya" would work better--right as he cues his phone up to the chorus of the Outkast song. Both Hayden and Ilya make exaggerated gagging noises and try to get the phone away from him, but Shane is living his best life and won every speed contest he's ever been in for a reason. (Also, he Bluetoothed it to the house sound system, so it's in every room now. The refrain on loop.)

The "shayden" in-universe fan thing is fun! But HAVE WE CONSIDERED in-universe fans shipping Hayden and Ilya (Haya? Hilya? Pikanov?)

Evidence:

Every time Hayden brings Ilya up in a group, you can see his captain and BFF Shane wincing or looking exasperated because Hayden cannot stop talking about his secret boyfriend, obviously.

When Pike is asked directly about Rozanov in interviews, Shane always shuts him up and takes the question himself.

Stats don't lie. Ilya's checks against Pike are some of his lowest stats against any other player.

Clearly, Hayden is trapped by his loyalty to his best friend and no one considers that Shane doesn't want to hear his bestie badmouth his lover for the fifth time that week, or that Ilya would rather press his whole body up against Shane than his friend.
