Ok, so, Charlie saying in the pilot that her father told her “You don’t take shit from other demons” never sat right with me once the show actually aired. I always thought that it was just another one of those characterization details that changed when the show was being made, one that really made everyone’s perception of Lucifer extremely different from what he turned out to be, and not in a way where it’s like ‘you think he’s this way but he’s actually like this’, but in a way where it just makes no sense. This made him out to be a no-nonsense-toxic-masculinity type father, which is nothing like how he’s portrayed in the show, even before we meet him. In the show, before he’s introduced, while we don’t hear too much of him, he’s implied to be, well, a deadbeat Dad. He’s neglectful and not in Charlie’s life, and (as seen with the meeting with Adam in the first episode) he sometimes pushes his responsibilities as king onto her. Now though, with the reveal that he can’t hurt sinners, I think it makes more sense. He wasn’t saying this because he thinks that Charlie would be weak or whatever for not standing up for herself, he’s saying this because he wants her to be protected from the violence sinners can cause and he can’t be the one to protect her. He can’t do anything to them if she’s hurt or in danger, so he needs her to be able to stand up for herself.
