Pilotwings 64, one of the absolute staples of the Nintendo 64 console. In terms of aesthetics, it took a bit of a step in a different direction from the original title on the SNES by using more cartoon-oriented designs to represent its characters, as well as presenting an overall comical feeling to its mechanics, down to even the, at times, hilarious voice work. Despite these qualities, this is a serious title for the system, and more than worthy of anyone’s time. Pilotwings 64 works with tight controls, decent visuals, and a system of various wacky flight simulator tests that will keep you up all night pushing for gold badges. On top of the core gameplay, this game also played around with some really awesome bonus levels - from being shot across an island from a cannon, skydiving, to being given bird-like wings you use to glide freely across any stage (as you unlock more of them). That’s just scratching the surface of how entertaining this game can be; whether you’re hang-gliding, rocket-belting, gyro-coptering, etc, this iteration of PilotWings still proudly represents the power of the console it belongs to. It’s challenging enough in its later stages, but never feels unfair. I’ve been playing this game on and off for twenty years, and I can still confidently recommend to retro and modern gamers. And please excuse my rose-tinted nostalgia shades here, but some of my best memories include my days playing this game with my dad at five years old in the 90s.
