Creative Bird Feeder Attracts Pine Siskins
Happy New Year! Pine siskin. Jefferson County, Colorado. Photo by Amber Maitrejean
It's been mentioned elsewhere but this winter we may have an irruption year for some species. Just like the Red-breasted Nuthatches, I also do not see Pine Siskins every year. But yesterday, a flock came over to the bird bath. Now I am silently hoping for some Redpolls and, please, bird gods, some Evening Grosbeaks… Cold season birding can be fun too!
Pine Siskin (Spinus pinus). Family Fringillidae, order Passeriformes.

Introducing now for what feels the the first time in at least a decade: The Sun!!

These photos made me realize I haven't seen pine siskins in a long time! Since April of 2024. They're just not a bird that shows up regularly where I live, so I only see them when I happen to travel to the right place at the right time.
