Piombi prison cells, Doge’s Palace, Venice, Italy.
Built beneath the palace’s lead-covered roof, these cells were used for prisoners of the powerful Council of Ten, often in political cases.
The heavy timber, iron bolts, and layered locks show how security was built into every detail — yet the Piombi became famous for one escape: Giacomo Casanova’s daring break from the prison in 1756.
