woah mate, I've never thought of Laertes being younger than Ophelia. I always pictured them as either twins or Laertes as the older brother, just based on how his dialogue is written, but I really like that idea. I think it would just make that scene all the more endearing, like there's no possible way Ophelia could take him seriously, and it works as a contrast to the way Polonius actually pushes her around

I usually read them as either twins or with Laertes being just a teeny bit older, but it’s really interesting to play around with the age dynamics there.

If Laertes is the baby brother, then it’s quite possible that he grew up with her as the closest thing to a mother figure (I’m thinking like a 10-15 year age gap here), so when she dies that’s the last of his support structures, not just his entire family and everyone he cares about. No wonder he kind of loses it.

It also puts her her closer in age to thirty-year-old Hamlet which puts any past romance between Hamlet and Ophelia in a somewhat different light than if they’re both quite young (and therefore both kind of new at this), of if there’s a significant age gap between Hamlet and Ophelia (which introduces a power differential beyond the class divide).Hamlet, Ophelia, and Horatio as adults who’ve already been through a lot, and Laertes as the baby brother trailing around after them.

Yeah, it’s not my go-to reading, but it’s a production I’d love to see.

I meant to ask this decades ago: what does heorublac mean? i searched it on google and it only came up with links to your blog.

It’s an Old English word that basically means death-pale. The Beowulf manuscript is the only place it shows up (aside from dictionaries and things about Beowulf), so, umm, I seem to have glutted the internet. Whoopsies, sorry about that, Beowulf.
