the whole thing with george coming into the pits and merc claiming that they weren't ready for him to pit is genuine bullshit, considering the fact that a team can get penalized for team personnel being in the pitlane before they need to actively work on a car

With no one responding to George's radio, and the pit crew standing with tyres ready, there was no other possible conclusion for George other than to pit.

With their explanation, merc is, at this point in time, the only team that fooled their own driver with a dummy pitstop.
