The next princess is Merida!
I polled my Insta followers & Merida was by far the most requested princess!
Brave is a movie that is openly inspired by the creator’s favorite Scottish Things TM from the 9th century to the 12th. Plus Tartans...... tartans definitely did not exist even in 12th century Scotland & family tartans became a thing even later. Merida’s in-movie clothing is much more reminiscent of a John William Waterhouse painting - beautiful but not “historically accurate”.
So instead I focused on things in the movie that could be dated sort of together.... her mother’s costume is a standout/iconic look so I used her as the initial touch-point time-wise and went from there!
So after the Norman Invasion women could wear their hair long for a short period of time or in long (iconic) braids that look fantastic so of course that’s where we were headed! She's in a dark blue kirtle that is pretty low-maintenance/”tom-boy”, she has a subtle celtic-bear design at the hem, untamable hair, a leather belt, and a torc (torcs went out of style ~1100 so it’s possible & Scotland is the “backwater” of civilized Europe right now so not a lot is available specific to their fashion anyway.....
Oh! and she should have a plaid/brat(?) that is a term for basically a cloak/wrap for this time period BUT it would not have a “plaid” pattern for a few more centuries...
Send her some love on Instagram!
