mokadara replied to your post: thoughts on first play sesh of nier automata:...
I loved the first NieR and I love Platinum, so I’m caught between Nier: Automata, Horizon Zero Dawn, or waiting on Persona 5 : (
Not knowing much about Persona other than that they’re turn-based RPGs and having seen my buddy play a bunch of Horizon Zero Dawn (IE have a couple hours of experience with Nier: A and Horizon, give or take stuff I’ve heard on the net), get Horizon if you want a more explorative, open-world title that puts enough of a refreshment on the genre staples like map towers to make it probably one of the highest-quality open world games available, and get Nier if you want a more fast-paced, combat-driven game where your character progress is done through weapon upgrades and swap-in swap-out character upgrade chips akin to Megaman Battlenetwork or Paper Mario’s cost-based-character-enhancement systems.
thoughts on first play sesh of nier automata: very, very fun start. the combat, at least initially, is complex in a way that rewards more complex player input rather than punishes simpler input. IE if you are using more buttons and doing more things the enemies die faster but if you just focus on hitting them with your weapons and don’t worry about the extra stuff you can still win, it just might take longer/put you at greater risk of getting hit in slightly more protracted battles.
MGR:R-style melee blended with shoot-em-up mechanics is sweet.
