PizzaPala is a takeaway counter within the Great (so modest, guys) Supermarket in Pacific Place, it's at the crossroads of aisle 3, the fish counter and the bakery. Yeah, weird. If you get lost maybe there's a (Granny Smith's) Apple map to navigate you through the groceries.
This spot used to specialise in Neopolitan pizza but they've fucked that idea off and are now working on Roman pizzas. Gone are the Neo's with their freckly charred crusts and thin soupy centres. 'In' are the crisp, yet bouncey and breadier Romans; cut into squares for all you quadrilateral fans.
PizzaPala annoyingly call themselves pizza artists which is a bit fucking wanky when you're located in the striplit belly of a supermarket. It'd be a bit like, I dunno, singing a song called 'Like a Virgin' when you're Madonna.
Staff tread that cusp of being apathetic or cool. Whatever - it's a counter in a supermarket so let's not shoot too high on service.
There's a really good selection of carby slabs to pick from:
Once you've chosen what you want, take it to the supermarket checkout. NB: The cashier at the front is nearly always jam-packed, so for the sake of your sanity go to the one towards Watson's Wine.
Mushroom and pancetta HK$35 was dang tasty; thin slices of salty pancetta, lardy and translucent from the heat of an oven they sat nicely on top of earthy mushrooms. The dough was great, crisp with a bit of chew.
Quatro formaggi HK$35 was also good. Splodges of creamy, clean ricotta and dashes of intense gorgonzola; patches of brown where the cheese had caught the heat had an addictive deep flavour.
The potato pesto was also a white (no tomato) pizza HK$30. The thin slices of waxy potato turned crunchy at the edges and came slathered in a neat grassy pesto.
As far as an Italian bite that'll satiate and stir the tastebuds without pilaging your wallet, this place is like egg whites in a plastic bowl - kinda unbeatable.
Long live PizzaPala's 'Great' mini Roman empire.
