Compilation of random sketchbook stuff, some VinLuis and some Xiaoven/Venxiao cuz I used some of these Xiaoven sketches for VinLuis cuz I liked the poses lol
I also redid Vin’s reference to go along with Luis! I decided I dont need a reference for ‘Heart’ because I changed the plot + character of Vin and he never goes by Heart in the story so it makes no sense. I should be clear that Heart isnt a deadname, he doesnt mind being called that, he just prefers the name Vin so dont worry Im fine with anyone calling him Vin/Heart interchangeably.
I felt like Luis and Vin needed new refs since my way of drawing them both has changed a lot, but I don’t plan to redraw any other references at all. Might redraw Carmen if he ends up needing it but I dont see that happening anytime soon.
I tried something a little bit different, still don’t really care to render properly cuz its just really not my thing so I did a light way of setting up the scene. tw for the story (and image) of blood, but I don’t really explain in a lot of detail anyways.
Luis met Vin several times before he developed a crush, the two were good friends and got substantially closer each time they met. They first met when Luis was badly injured in a fight against a mob of demons. Bloodied and unable to move, he was found by Vin, who got help immediately. At this time, Luis had his service dog, Leia, who did not survive the ambush. After Vin called for Carmen and Dandy’s help, the three took Luis and Leia to an emergency hospital close by to get Luis treated, Leia was unable to be saved and was dead on arrival. Even though Carmen and Dandy left the hospital after bringing Luis there, Vin decided to stay behind a bit just so he could ask Luis what happened when he woke up. Surprisingly, Luis welcomed the stranger when he came to check on him. After a short, awkward conversation, Luis explained to Vin that he was a demon slayer and was simply injured during his work slaying a mob of demons.
“What about your dog…?”
“It’s a shame she was caught up in this.. But it’s too late now. You should probably leave, you’ve no business tending to a stranger’s wounds.”
Luis and Vin did not even exchange names at this time, but Vin knew he would see Luis again after hearing he was a Reaper. Now that he and Sin had just gotten married, Vin was likely going to be at the Tree of Death house very often, and would likely run into Luis. However, he realized quickly enough that the Reaper he met that day did not live in the house, and actually lived on his own in Death City. It would be a while before they met again, hopefully in a better circumstance.
I think it was probably weird to make the last version the way it was. Still kept it simple, the concept is the same and scene is pretty much identical, but the perspective looks a bit better when Vin doesn’t look so... squashed how he’s sitting, and Luis looked awkward with the way his head was tilted. And you know what? I think this looks much prettier, even if the mood is a bit different than the first drawing of this scene.
The second time they met, Vin was playing his flute on the highest branches of the Tree of Death house. Luis heard the music from below while he was cleaning his injuries after returning from a mission. Luis listened nearby, moving a bit closer to the sound until he could hear the melodious flute more clearly. Luis ended up sitting near the flute player for hours while he sketched in his sketchbook. When he was done playing, Vin chuckled at Luis for being such a captivating audience, and gave him his flute.
“Maybe when we meet next we can play a duet? Take great care of that flute, I know you’ll love it when you teach yourself to play!”
“... You’re the one I met before right..? I didn’t..”
“..? The one who was injured..? Lost your dog..? I see you have a new one down below.”
“..Ah. Yeah. So it was you then..?”
“Yeah that was me. Why do you sound so sad about it?”
“... Your name. I never got to ask your name. I also never properly thanked you. Let me repay you somehow.”
“Oh! My name is Vin, I guess you’ve never heard of me then?”
After their meeting, it wasn’t much later that Luis realized that ‘Vin’ was the preferred name of Heart, the Archangel who married Lord Death. Luis felt the need to distance himself from Lord Death’s spouse, but found himself captivated by him all the same.
In the lonely World of Death, Vin found himself singing songs or playing his flute at the top of the Tree of Death nearly every single day. From below, he saw mortal onlookers listening to the beautiful music flowing from Vin’s flute as he lost himself in the music. Sometime amidst his flute playing, Vin notices a figure in the corner of his eye, a familiar face that nearly causes him to blow a note off key. From the corner of his vision, he notices the Angel whom he rescued several weeks before, sitting on a nearby branch with a sketchbook in his lap. Vin wanted desperately to call out to ask him what he was drawing, but decided against it, continuing to play. When sunset approached, Vin set down his flute in his lap, glancing over at the stranger still lingering on the nearby branch, now using his phone’s flashlight to continue drawing in his sketchbook in the dim light. Unable to restrain himself, Vin breaks out into laughter, causing the Reaper to look at Vin with a startled expression. Vin manages to stifle his laughter, gently moving closer to the stranger and handing him his beautiful handmade flute.
…
“Oh! My name is Vin, I guess you’ve never heard of me then?”
Before the Reaper had the chance to answer, an Angel of Death called out to the Reaper, causing him to nod a farewell before leaping down the tree next to his snow white service dog.
Luis. That’s his name. I’ll be seeing him again, hopefully soon.
Even though their meeting was fleeting, Vin felt a flutter at the sight of such a gentle Reaper. Something tugged at his heartstrings as he watched the Reaper from above, petting and kissing his service dog on the head before entering the Tree of Death without looking back. Even though they just met, Vin was intrigued by the strange Angel who he once found battered and dying. Vin couldn’t place why, but he wanted to see that red-eyed Reaper again.
