a lot of fics I read involving ripslinger state that he's a p-51 mustang, but I don't see the resemblance at all unless heavy modifications were made for racing purposes or something :P

there is an actual mustang that shows up in the first movie, and if you compare him and rip then there's some very obvious differences

I personally think that ripslinger is no specific type of aircraft, but instead more of a mixbreed like how mcqueen is no specific car model, but if I had to give him a label i would compare him most to the tsunami, a one-of-a-kind raceplane from the 80s

there are some big differences to be pointed out, but ripslinger is just a weird ass looking guy lmao, there's no perfect match I know of

I do think mustang rip would make for some great story potential though. what expectations come with being a plane made for combat in this world? was he pressured into joining the air force at some point in his life? or did he remain a civilian? what do people say when a plane they expect to be in the military isn't? the possibilities...

I rewatched planes recently and wait holy shit .. they both grew their wings... helping each other... dusty wouldn't have ever became an air racer without skipper's help and skipper wouldn't have flown again if he never trained dusty... Guys. Shakes and foams at the mouth.

I somehow failed to take notes about this movie and barely remember anything about it. I do recall an extended sequence of barely disguised military propaganda in which the US air force saved the day. 

Other than that it was a generic as hell racing movie plot, with all the existential horror and troubling, unanswered questions that come with the Cars universe. Imagine a movie about a human marathon runner who gets severely wounded and all his fellow competitors donate organs and limbs, so he can be re-made into some kind of horrific flesh golem and finish the race.
