Invading the planet.
How are we going to do this...
I am assuming, of course, diplomacy has failed, which is a pity. Diplomacy can be wonderful, and it ought to be used far more often in fiction.
Okay there are many options, given how things go.
1. Nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure...
Well, other than leveling all indigenous life in a genocidal barrage and irradiating the planet to a lifeless rock, I'd say that's pretty effective.
Doesn't mean it's a good decision.
2. Jam communications, send in units to outer areas, move in and take population centers.
This seems to be the usual method. I admit, it has some merit, but then you end up with resistance. Lots of stories use this, so it's tried and true. Even post-invasion, the unrest left behind is astounding.
3. #2, but with robots.
Star Wars Episode I. Assuming the armies are weaker and planetary defenses are unable to stop your numbers. Expect many robots to be used, and eventual electronic warfare retaliation.
4. Hit key locations, disable important enemy systems, then invade.
This is what the Covenant do in Halo. And man are they good at it to the point that when you find out, it's too late. Bonus points if you use teleportation.
5. The easy way.
This is my big monologue.
What is the easy way? A combination of these. See, Information is vital. For that you send in spies, cloaked probes, whatever. After that, you can find out what the defenses are, deployment, what sort of firepower expected to face... All sorts of wonderful tactical information.
Then you act accordingly... First you create comm deadzones away from civilization. That's where you drop your robot troops, have them lay low and eliminate interferance. While attention is on that, then you sabotage the planetary defenses.
That's when you call in the fleet. A few pinpoint orbital strikes, non-nuclear, of course, can be used to destroy main strongholds, or air bases. Once they've lost air-power, then you use your dropships to reinforce the robotic troops sent earlier, with plenty of air support.
Now, a very important thing to consider is that offing civilians makes your target angry and liable to rebel after the takeover. To preserve resources and life, it should be made clear that the last thing intended by the invasion is to kill people. Of course, the best way is to actually cater to them, but this is if you have ridiculous amounts of resources.
Rather, deals should be made with civilians or military commanders, or assurances of autonomy after the takeover is completed. Oh, and never send your own troops down planetside unless you have a completely secured location, or even a building dropped from orbit. Ambushes will hurt the morale of your own troops.
Once you have allies (if you have them) focus on bringing down or capturing the leaders of factions on the planet, as well as backup leaders. Power centers for you galactic rule should be placed within cities under complete control, and those cities ought to be rebuilt to your standards and fortified.
Once all opposition is removed, there will always be dissidents. Always. Wiping them out causes more dissidents. First, find out what their problem is. If you can, make allowances to lessen their issues, but don't give in until they walk all over you.
Now some things, like damages and the like should be rebuilt, otherwise you are going to make your new citizens/subjects discontent. Also consider what uses the planet has, and possible futures. Strip-mining the planet is very short-sighted, and your enemies will use that to rally against you. If it's lovely, consider a vacation world. Actually, always consider a vacation world.
People love vacation worlds, and it makes money flow, presuming you use money.
Snow? Think winter sports world. make sure to have ample supply of cozy lodges. Tropical? Oh yes, beaches, cruises, sailing...
Really, think of what can be done during a vacation.
Oh, and never invade a supercomputer world. It's a bad idea all around.
