By 👉🏻 @dr.sabarizvi 💫 Root cavities:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ New patient presented to the office this week with a chief complaint of “to fix the black spot” on his front tooth. In his case, cavities were forming close the gum line.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🤷🏻♀️ Why does this happen?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ There is plaque left at the gum line leading to recession of the gums.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🤷🏻♀️ How does recession happen? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Can be due to gum disease, dental trauma due to clenching/grinding or simply aging.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🤷🏻♀️ What happens when the root surface is exposed?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s more susceptible to decay since it’s the “softer” part of the tooth called dentin.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Root decay progresses very quickly and can spread on the inside to the pulp of the tooth needing a root canal.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🤷🏻♀️ What did we do?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We gently lasered the gum tissue to gain access to all the decay. With a laser, no bleeding is experienced and therefore we were able to predictably bond composites to his root. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Lastly, we polished real well so as to not attract plaque as it would on a rough surface. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I advised my patient to brush at a 45 degree angle towards the gum line.
