12: things you said when you thought i was asleep

It is impossible to describe a dark and stormy night as anything else, and this I had long since determined that night as I sat at the dingy little desk the country inn had offered, and attempted to set down at least some of my recollections of the night, in order to transform them into a story worthy of print some day. It was impossible to accomplish anything however, with the wind howling up and around the tiny building in a horrifying fashion.

This dichotomy thus explained, it comes as no surprise that my dear Holmes had managed to find sleep through it all, on the solitary bed that we had been told was the only one available for the night. I did not blame him fully - the case he had just solved this morning, and it had been a tough indeed, leading at one point to us digging a hole by ourselves to prove a theory. He hadn’t slept well the night before either, so it goes to figure that after his victory there was nothing stopping him from finally allowing his body to rest, not even the tumultuous weather outside.

I closed my papers. Even without the noise, I was too tired myself to get any further work done, and the candle that I had been flickering dangerously for quite a while now. I prepared for bed as quietly as I could, though I knew there wasn’t much chance of waking Holmes. He is a light sleeper in most cases, rising due to the slightest freak of the floorboards, but when he has exhausted himself this thourougly it usually led to his flame being fizzled out somewhat for a few days, and his guard was more or less lowered when it came to my company.

I stretched myself out on my side of the bed attempting to get comfortable, when Holmes shifted slightly in his sleep. His hands came to rest on my left arm beside him, and he pulled himself closer, almost unconsciously.

“Holmes,” I whispered, but he remained deeply asleep.

I relaxed once more, but two minutes later was roused once again, by Holmes uttering one word. “John,”

It was the first time I could remember him saying my first name, and a shudder ran through me unbidden. Holmes, unaware, slept on.

“Holmes?” I hazarded a whisper.

He still did not stir, but he reached out then, to grab hold of my arm, and then did the strangest thing. Seemingly in his sleep, my friend brought himself closer to my person and proceeded to bury his face into my shoulder. “John,” I heard once again, muffled by my nightclothes.

Holmes remained still after that, and after a couple of minutes of feeling him snore delicately, I in turn relaxed, and exhaustion seeped in once more. I resolved to wake up early, to save my dear friend any embarrassment, but for now I was content to leave him be.

@plasticonobandana i’m not much better lol i just finished listening to 175. i’m definitely going to finish the series eventually, because i do still like it and want to see how it ends but yeah. a lot of the intrigue went out of the show when the characters started knowing what was going on. i guess for me, when the characters stopped being scared of the avatars (or started being the avatars themselves) is when the horror stopped being really effective for me. 

i did not know jonny said that he had thought about ending things after season 4! i was thinking as i was writing the original post that with some tweaking, the show could have easily ended with the season 4 finale. it would have been a much more open ending, but with horror, again, i feel that the more you explain and try to tie things up in a bow at the end, the less effective it is. i’m going to wait until season 5 finishes before i slam the gavel on this one, but as of right now i’m leaning heavily towards believing they should have just ended the show after season 4.

“If I got struck by lightning,” Jenny’s saying, her voice soft and sleepy, “would my kisses be able to conduct electricity?”

Gil considers the question. “Assuming you weren’t killed upon impact,” she begins, then hears Jenny’s quiet laugh. “Oh,” she says, blushing. “Was that–that was a romantic sort of question, wasn’t it?”

Thunder rumbles outside. Jenny snuggles into Gil’s shoulder. “A little bit,” she says. “It’s okay. You’ve got a scientific kind of mind.”

“Kindly don’t test this particular theory, dear,” says Gil, a little worried. She knows Jenny wouldn’t try to get struck by lightning, but then Jenny does seem to try to be as unpredictable as possible. “Your kisses are most certainly electric, even without the added potency of a lighting strike.”

Jenny smiles just as lightning illuminates the bedroom. Leaning in, she kisses Gil, moving to straddle her hips. Her hands press Gil’s shoulders, pushing her back into the pillows. Gil gasps sharply and moans.

“Electric, huh?” Jenny purrs.

“Quite,” says Gil dizzily.
