Spoons clucked her tongue sympathetically, or at least simulated the sound. She was mildly surprised to hear something so personal from him, but she didn’t draw attention to it.

It didn’t take a genius to notice Spoons had a habit of lying or at the very least was hiding something. She also had a habit of revealing odd truths about herself whenever she was caught rambling -- truths that made her stories even more mysterious. Or annoying.
It had taken a night of listening to her ramble on and on, as well as at least a couple bottles of liquor. She didn’t seem to be affected, but she made no qualms about drinking a few glasses. She’d weaved stories about fairs and circuses twisted with those of bars and raider battles, or “that one Hollywood fella what drove me ‘round in his fancy car.” One way or the other they ended up on the subject of her maker and she let the year slip out.
“1920,” she repeated, “was when I was built. It ain’t that long ago, is it?”
