every once in a while i see people bring up the city of wizards dream lore ("crunchy dreams" from special records, cutscene named "if only...") that has pure vanillas dream (more like recurring nightmare) aboute white lily (more dark enchantress cookie than white lily but whatever) and i was once again painfully reminded of it.

why i say painfully is because people usually (always - nobody ever uses it in a different context) use this cutsecene to definitely prove that it is a canon and objvective fact that pure vanilla was in love with white lily or had (maybe still has) romantic feelings for her (and usually go on about to how one-sided and "toxic" their relationship is) and i just wanna give my two cents as to why - while you are within your right to interpret the story we are presented with that way and by all means please go ahead and enjoy the cookies however your heart desires - this cutscene is not DEFINITIVE proof that pure vanilla did, factually, canonically and uncontestably, have romantic feelings for white lily.

this is the line i always see quoted (version from the official english translation, with a google translated from korean version i've seen floating around saying something like "do i still love white lily" or similar). either way the general meaning is pure vanilla asking himself is he still holds deep affection for white lily. which yes, does seem to imply romantic feelings, when stripped of context like this. HOWEVER this line does have context.

the whole cutscene is part of a looong collection of cutscenes where milky way cookie goes through a bunch of different cookies' dreams and this one is pure vanilla's. this dream starts with dialogure perfectly repeated from one of the "memories of two friends" cutscenes from the academy, but which evetually turns into white lily asking pure vanilla what he would think if she suddenly became evil, which leads into pure vanilla being like "why would you suddenly turn evil and of course i will always love you" (not the exact quote but that's the idea), which then leads to white lily blaming pure vanilla for "abandoning" her and listing a bunch of selfish reasons as to why pure vanilla would resent her (pure vanilla dear we know you hate yourself but PLEASE STOP this is not healthy for you), after which you have pure vanilla thinking he woke up, but actually still in a dream, asking that line. (also i wanna mention that this does seem to be happening before beast yeast ep 1 (thats also when this collention of cutscenes was released) when pure vanilla honest to god thought dark enchantress cookie was just white lily)

now, put into the context of - this is a dream in which pure vanilla, who hates himself, blames himself for esentially not being a caring enough friend to white lily, because, with the limited information he has, he thinks that had he actually been a good friend he would've noticed something was causing white lily enough suffering to eventually turn her into dark enchantress cookie. but at the same time he also does (and has since they were students) deeply care about white lily, which also conflicts him because does that mean he also cares that much about dark enchantress cookie? well, since he does care for white lily, does that mean he doesn't want to stop dark enchantress cookie's evil, does it mean he actually wants that evil to happen?

and there you have it: pure vanilla has to question his entire morality because of the fact that he cared for white lily which could mean he cares for dark enchantress cookie too. so "do i still have feelings for white lily cookie?" does not mean "am i still in love with white lily? have i not moved on from those romantic feelings and just let us be freinds" it means "does that fact that i cared so much about white lily mean i care for dark enchantress cookie and does that mean i want her to succeed?"
