“You’re marrying me off?!” Zam shrieked. “That’s your solution?? You’re marrying me off?!” His sister- the Boss, showed no emotion as he yelled. She just put a hand on his arm and pulled him towards her office. They were currently in the lobby of her floor, people were running back and forth doing this and that. Well, now they were staring at Zam because he was yelling, but normally they’d be doing various tasks.

Zam shoved her arm off of him and trudged into the office. He slammed one door behind him and motioned for the bodyguards to leave. They didn’t respond to him since the Boss was here, but left as soon as she ushered them out. The Boss took a seat at her desk while Zam jumped on top of the desk to sit, throwing papers and knickknacks out of the way.

“Why is marriage the best option? Zam asked slowly. He tried to keep his voice controlled though he was brimming with emotion. He also knew why marriage was the best option, he said it himself earlier this week, he just didn’t want to believe that this was happening.

“You know why marriage is the best option,” the Boss said. Then she sighed and Zam’s sister came out, collapsing into the chair like she was melting.

“Zam,” she held her forehead in her hands. “I don’t want this either, but it’s the best way to ensure an alliance with Eclipse.”

Zam let out a long breath, blowing his bangs back in the process. He knew she was right, she always was. He didn’t want to marry some random Eclipse member, but taking even a sliver of the Pierce’s territory was more important than Zam feeling bad. Political marriages didn’t have to be binding anyway, he would slap the “open relationship” label on them so fast. It was still going to suck though.

“Okay,” Zam sighed. “Who am I marrying? Please be a girl so I can just tell her I’m gay and get it over with.”

Zam’s sister winced. “Umm. It’s not a girl.” Zam raised his eyebrows in anticipation.

The Boss pulled a sleek sheet of paper out of her top desk drawer and slid it onto the table. “Here,” she said, like she wasn’t showing Zam a picture of his least favorite person.

“Seriously??” Zam exclaimed. “You’ve got to be kidding.”

His sister shook her head firmly. “That’s him,” she affirmed.

“Vitalasy.” Zam said plainly. “I’m marrying Vitalasy. The Midnight Fox. You’re having me marry a furry.”

“Is that what you’re the most worried about?” His sister asked hesitantly. It wasn’t and she knew it wasn’t.

“No that’s not what I’m most worried about!” Zam jumped off the desk and launched into pacing around the room. “That’s fucking Vitalasy! He doesn’t give a fuck about anything, he has zero morales! You’re going to marry me to him and he’ll keep me in a cage! You’ll have to keep me in a cage so he doesn’t kill me when he gets bored!”

Zam’s sister dropped her head onto the desk exasperatedly. “Zam. You’ve met him, he’s not like that.”

“Yes he is!” Zam whined, rounding the corner of his fifth loop. “You're literally putting a chicken and a fox together in a cage.”

“Since when are you a chicken?” Zam’s sister asked, bobbing her head back up in a confused way.

“I’m not a chicken,” Zam argued, even though he just said that he was. “I’m saying he’s going to fucking kill me.”

Zam’s sister shook her head and got up. She walked over to Zam and stopped his momentum to wrap him in a hug. Zam hugged her back slowly, just enough for her to know that he wasn’t happy.

“I’m sorry for making you do this,” she whispered.

“It’s for the best,” Zam said back.

“Do you really believe that?”

“Yes. But I still don’t want to do it.” Zam pressed his cheek into her hair.

“But you’ll do it?”

“… I’ll do it.”

Varellie collapsed onto Zam’s shoulder. “Thank you,” she breathed.
