Sappho - a zine for women who identify as part of the LGBT+ community and members of the community who experience attraction to women
Hello everyone! I have had a lot of time on my hands and no creative outlet. I am a bisexual woman and have been wanting to get closer to expressing my identity and give others the opportunity to do the same. As a project, I would like to work on my first zine, a place of expression for women who are part of the LGBT+ community and/or who are part of the community and experience attraction to women. I do not claim to be an authority on any of these topics and my goal is that through this creative experience we are able to learn more about each other and the ways we express ourselves. I want to provide a place for others to share their work.
To fill the pages of the first issue, I’m looking for:
Text pieces (Articles, commentaries, poetry, etc. Anything you’d like to write about it.)
Visual pieces (art, comics, etc. Anything printable you want to draw or create about it.)
If you have anything else in mind, for instance hybrid pieces with both text and pictures, they’re welcome too :)
I would love to keep this zine SFW if possible, simply because I would like it to be accessible to all.
I will not accept anything hateful or prejudice in any way! Any trans-exclusionary content will not be allowed in the zine. I am trusting you all to express yourselves in ways that show love and kindness to others within the LGBT+ community.
Send your piece(s) to [email protected] before the 30th of April. Include a title for your piece and the name you want to be credited with (they’ll be printed in the table of contents or similar use). If you would rather remain anonymous, that is fine as well. Just please let me know!
For text pieces, I’m not putting any characters or word count limits. I will be figuring out layout once I receive everything. Raw text content is perfectly fine.
For visual pieces, no restriction in format either. Pictures can be in color. It is my ultimate goal to print in color when the time comes, but keep in mind that if it ends up being too much financially I may switch to greyscale. Moreover, if you’d like to be printed full-page or close enough, keep in mind to have a canvas size at the very least A5 in 300 dpi (±1800 px wide) for vertical pieces, and A4 in 300 dpi (±3500 px wide) for horizontal pieces. For horizontal pieces meant to be printed on a double-page spread, remember to keep any significant element away from the centre, since it will otherwise end up on the fold.
If you are creating a collage style piece, I welcome it, but please make sure you have the rights to whatever images you are using. I want to make sure we are able to distribute the zine when completed, even if it’s just digital.
I plan to take my time on this project. I have design experience, but this will be my first zine and I want to do a good job! I don’t have a specific release date, but will be updating everyone as the project continues.
You retain all rights to the piece you submit, meaning you can do anything else with it, including publishing it elsewhere if you wish. If you feel like waiting for the zine release, that would be ideal, but it’s your choice. By sending it, you simply allow me to publish it in the zine and display it in things related to this project (e.g. photographs of the printed zine).
Feel free to message me on Tumblr. I’m happy to help if I can and want this project to be something special and expressive for all who contribute. If you do not want to contribute, please share so others can be a part of the project.
