Hey Tumblr, I'm The Biophone, and I'm in need of some help. As some of you know, I'm a second-year journalism student and a student journalist. Writing is my passion, and it is eventually going to be my career. That's part of why the recent crashing of my computer is so devastating to me. At the time it crashed, it took one of the pieces I was writing for my school's newspaper with it, meaning I had to rewrite it from scratch alongside three other pieces. Not only is the laptop a required part of my program, but it's also a vital part of my daily work. What is making this situation even more stressful is the fact that I cannot afford the repairs right now. One local repair shop is estimating a cost of $475 CAD to fix my laptop, which is much cheaper than what the dealer is projecting, but it's still out of my price range. That is where I turn to you, Tumblr. I've set up a Pledgie to raise funds for my laptop repairs. If each of my followers were to donate $1.67 CAD, my problem would be over quickly, and I would be so, so grateful to you all. Help Marta speak at RubyConf Argentina 2014!

Please, please, please help me speak at RubyConf Argentina! My talk already got selected, but I need to collect money to get to Buenos Aires from Berlin. Every euro (and every reblog) counts. ♥

Some time ago I submitted a talk proposal for RubyConf Argentina, which is happening on October 24 & 25. After a couple of weeks I got an email informing me that my talk ''Programming, languages, literature'' was chosen for the conference. How awesome is that!

I started this pledgie page because I need your help! I can deliver the talk only if I collect enough money for plain tickets from Europe to Argentina.

Here's the abstract of my talk:

Have you ever pondered on the similarities between programming languages and literature? If you haven't, here's your chance! Just as the development of literature can be divided into epochs with their distinctive themes, there are stages in the evolution of programming languages. Code and literature have more in common than you think! Let's have a look at programming languages and compare them to well known works of literature to (hopefully) come to a conclusion that programming does not exist in a cultural vacuum and that its development is significantly inspired by culture.

Please read, I need opinions! Anyone!

So in around 6 or 7 months, my parents will be moving to south carolina, and I will be staying here in Washington and i have to quickly find a place to live, finish high school, get a job and figure out stuff about college.

Now my parents have never saved money for us to go to college, and I'll be the first person in my family to go. I'm currently on the job search and I won't quit searching until I have one but seriously... I don't know how I'm going to survive the next few chapters of my life...

My parents aren't going to be helping me except for a little bit for communtiy college, but for the rest I need to come up with it myself. I need to pay rent as well, and I need to be buying my own food, clothes, gas, etc. 

Another thing is that I may have to sacrifice marching band, an activity that I'll only get to do in highschool, something I love  and i mean that. It's important to me... but I might not get to do it. Regardless of whether anyone cares or not, i thought it'd be worth mentioning because it's something i really don't want to give up... It's something only a teenager in highschool will ever get to do

My question is

If i were to use an online groupfunding site like kickstarter or pledgie, would my case just sound... stupid? I feel like raising money for a personal cause is wrong, yet i see people who have a following just giving them money for a new laptop or something. What is YOUR opinion? Would it be worth it to try? Because seriously, i'm desperate here. This news of my family moving, and my dad maybe moving companies, is new to me. It's a surprise. We didn't plan for this... I don't know what there is to do anymore.

I want to go to college, and more than that I just want to survive living on my own while i'm 17 and 18 and finishing high school. 

So yeah. Opinions? Suggestions?

Setting up a Pledgie for someone who really needs help

Whether you follow blatherlikeme or not, she really needs some help. Due to severe depression, she recently lost her home and is living in her car. Her sisters have helped her a little but they believe by practicing "tough love" she'll suddenly recover and fulfill their expectations. Many of us have mental health issues, we can relate.

As someone who was forced to live in a car at 19 and while pregnant, I know what that's like and no one should ever be in that position especially when she's struggling to just get through the day. It's really hard for her to accept help - we've been talking about it for quite some time and she finally agreed.

If you can help, please do. We raise money for a lot of people for a lot of different reasons. This is someone who is in dire need and anything we can raise will help to buy a meal or find a weekly rate motel until her case worker can find somewhere for her to live.

I know Tumblr tends to be good at this sort of thing, so I'll give it a shot.  Some friends of mine have this very loving and adorable dachshund who decided to eat a whole bag of ibuprofen and, while she survived, sustained severe kidney damage.  My friends cannot afford the $1000+ it will take to nurse DJ back to health or at least stability, so they are asking for donations.  Any little bit helps.  Please spread the word!
