I Hear the Sunspot Ep 5
Keep tissues handy because these two bring it.
The acting has been consistently good but in this episode our leads were fantastic. Subtle yet clear, emotions flickering across their faces, tears and near-tears.
Spoilers follow…
Taichi complains to his longtime friends about how Kohei disappeared. One of them points out that even if he doesn't know where to find Kohei that Kohei's mother runs a cooking school so he should be able to find him that way, which he does.
Kohei's mother is super friendly and appreciative of Taichi's friendship towards Kohei, and of course that he likes her food.
After some cake and a chat, Taichi has to go to work before Kohei gets back from the hospital. On his way out, he learns that the hamburger he liked so much was actually cooked by Kohei, not Kohei's mom, which clearly rocks him.
His boss at the restaurant sees him sunk in thought instead of his usual high-energy presentation, and after digging into the situation, provides some possible interpretations of Kohei's behavior around the Miho situation, giving Taichi even more to think about.
The next day at the movie club room, Taichi's friend asks about why Kohei is so interesting to him and the real—serious—Taichi emerges, without the cheerful clown mask.
He talks respectfully and perceptively about Kohei and how he's being treated by those around him. It's serious, with a somber edge and a hint of anger about the unfairness towards Kohei.
And Kohei appears at that moment with Taichi's phone, accidentally left behind when he was talking to Kohei's mom. Kohei quickly leaves, perhaps having heard much of what Taichi just revealed.
A little stunned for a moment, Taichi recovers and chases Kohei down. They talk, shout, things become clearer...
This scene is going down as one of my all-time BL favorites. The acting is perfect.
I could screenshot the whole thing but I couldn't do it justice. Just watch it.
The next day (?), Kohei encounters the two women in the sign language group and asks about joining, to their surprise.
The final scene is on the rooftop where Kohei eats lunch. To his surprise, Taichi arrives, makes a joke about not rolling down the hill this time. Kohei is taken aback, having expected that his confession and kiss would have been the end.
Taichi admits he was surprised, didn't know what to do in the moment, and has been thinking about the matter so much and so deeply that he of all people was forgetting to eat.
During this, Kohei is practically holding his breath waiting to see what Taichi says.
Then Taichi pulls out the flyer for a note-taker and says he wants the job.
And Kohei loses it.
Again, the actors absolutely nailed the scene. Lovely episode in its entirety. There's character development, story, emotion, and simple but effective cinematography. This show continues to delight.
