Muse A has a decent job and pays most of the rent, Muse B recently got fired from their job, hasn’t told Muse A yet, and isn’t in a rush to find a replacement job. Muse A likes their privacy and Muse B is happy walking around the apartment half-naked and entering their roommate’s space without knocking. They hardly agree on anything, from what to order for dinner to what temperature to keep the thermostat on. Just when Muse A is reaching their breaking point and on the verge of giving up the apartment they love to move back home because Muse B is driving them crazy and they can’t keep up with bills on their own, Muse A suffers a major setback/loss and Muse B is the only person who understands/can help them get through it.

A doctor on staff directs Muse B to Muse A, explaining that Muse A is very much alert, but does not respond to anyone that attempts to interact with them. The doctor suggests that Muse B sit with Muse A on the next day, perhaps reading them a novel or telling stories in the hopes that a fresh face who is neither staff nor patient will garner a positive response. Muse Bsigns in the following day with a copy of their favorite book in hand and sits at Muse A’s side to read. Muse A does not respond for days on end, but one afternoon they finally make eye contact with Muse B, the hint of a smile on their features, looking forward to continuing the story. Muse B is overwhelmed by the small gesture, suddenly hit by the realization that in spite of Muse A’s complete and utter silence, they have grown incredibly fond of them. As the novel progresses, so does the connection between volunteer and patient. Only when the last page has been read aloud does Muse A finally speak to Muse B. As the night goes on and the last dance begins, Muse A’s date is nowhere to be found. Muse B then decides to ask Muse A to dance with them. As they slow dance, Muse B whispers their confession into Muse A’s ear. Prom night ends and the two sit on the stairs outside the school, waiting for their parents to pick them up. Muse A can’t stop thinking about Muse B’s confession, thinking back to all the moments they have shared as friends, the good and the bad, and realize that they may even share the same feelings. Muse A’s thoughts are interrupted by their parents’ car pulling up, ready to bring them home. Without thinking, Muse A kisses Muse B gently on the cheek before running to the car.

They usually read a book or listen to music during the commute since they’re travelling for at least an hour.Muse A is seated on the train when Muse B gets on one afternoon. The only spot vacant in the car is right next to Muse A, so Muse B sits there. Muse A and Muse B share a quick glance and polite smile, but nothing more as the train doors close as the ride continues. Muse A is listening to their mp3 player and humming softly (or loudly), allowing Muse B to recognize the song that they’re listening to. Muse Bhappens to like that song a lot and is about to ask Muse A who the artist is when the train stops and more people get on.The car gets packed and it’s difficult for Muse B to talk over the other commuters, let alone spot Muse A though they’re still seated right beside each other. When the crowd clears out 2 stops later, Muse A gets off the train, but their mp3 player accidentally gets left behind on the seat. Muse B quickly scoops it up, not wanting anyone to swipe it and they rush to the doors as they close, unable to get to muse Awho they can see heading up the steps to exit the subway. Underneath those jitters, however, they’re hopeful that their parents will see the person they love for just how wonderful they are. Muse A and Muse B receive a chilly reception at Muse B’s home when Muse A asks for Muse B’s hand. It’s not that Muse A doesn’t seem like a good person, according to Muse B’s parents, but that their gender isn’t quite right for someone who wants to marry their child. Muse A and Muse B are shocked to learn that Muse B’s parents are transphobic and/or homophobic and are dead-set against the pair getting married, especially in this day and age. Muse B wants to marry Muse A anyway, no matter what, but it’ll break Muse B’s heart if their family doesn’t give their blessing and show up at their nuptials.

Muse A definitely wants to see more of their neighbor though. Muse B is kind, funny, and sexy in Muse A’s eyes; Muse B’s just not very good at hinting whether or not they’re attracted to Muse A back. When the power goes out throughout the building, on a particularly warm night, Muse A quickly sets out some candles to light their home, but they realize that they don’t have any matches to light them (and their stove only works on electrical power). -“Keep those eyes closed. No peeking.” Your lover instructs as he holds his hands over your eyes, guiding you to a secluded spot in the woods. “How much further?” You whine, tripping over yet another fallen branch. He chuckles and prompts you to stop after a few more steps. Keeping his eyes hands over your eyes, he leans close to your ear and whispers, “Remember when you were a kid and your neighbor had that awesome treehouse, but he wouldn’t let you play in it?” You wonder why he’s bringing this story up, but you nod and add, “Yeah, that little creep said girls weren’t allowed.” “I remember.. Well, me and a couple of buddies have been out here for the last few months, working on something special for you.” He says, slowly pulling his hands away, revealing the most spectacular treehouse you’ve ever seen. “Happy anniversary, babe.”

The car swerves off the road and into a ravine that Muse A is unable to maneuver out of. There’s no cell phone reception here, and there are no other cars passing by. Panic begins to creep in until Muse A hears a sound coming from within the thick of the snow-capped trees. He/She treks into the woods that border the desolate road in hopes of finding help. What little daylight there was is dwindling and the bite of frigid, winter air is setting in. Muse A can barely feel his/her fingers or toes when he/she stumbles upon a small cabin, smoke rising from a thin chimney. Muse B inhabits this cabin. He/She is on his/her way back to the cozy dwelling with an armful of fire wood when he/she spots Muse A, shivering in the ankle-deep snow. Muse B invites Muse A inside to warm up.
