Between 1940 and 2005, the United States spent $6 trillion on nuclear weapons, according to Stephen Schwartz, author of Atomic Audit: The Costs and Consequences of U.S. Nuclear Weapons Since 1940, published by the Brookings Institution. The Congressional Budget Office projects the country will spend an additional $634 billion on its nuclear arsenal in the next decade. Schwartz said in an email in July that he roughly estimates that, all told since 1940, the United States has spent more than $10 trillion on its nuclear weapons — their creation, management, and disposal. The Plowshares activists see that spending as pure and simple theft: public money that should have been used to care for people.

The Oliver Chilled Plow Works exhibit at the South Bend History Museum. The company grew to become one of the largest in Indiana and one of the world's largest producers of farm plows and horse drawn equipment during the late 19th century. The business was a major contributor to growth of South Bend and the surrounding area. 

James Oliver was inspired by a Bible verse from Isaiah, “… and they shall beat their swords into plowshares …,” to study Spanish sword-making techniques.  This led to his development of the strong and efficient chilled plow.

The Plowshares activists are on trial for anti-nuclear protest. Theologians say the Gospel’s on their side.

On April 4, 2018, the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., seven Plowshares activists illegally entered the naval submarine base in Kings Bay, Ga., staining the property with their blood and placing crime scene tape around the base. Now they are facing up to 25 years in prison.

In a joint statement, the Plowshare activists—Martha Hennessy, Elizabeth McAlister, Clare Grady, Patrick O’Neill, Carmen Trotta, Mark Colville and Steve Kelly, S.J.—said, “Nuclear weapons eviscerate the rule of law, enforce white supremacy, perpetuate endless war...and ensure impunity for all manner of crimes against humanity.” The group also called on the Catholic Church to take action: “We plead to our Church to withdraw its complicity in violence and war.”

Many church leaders, peace activists and theologians have voiced their support for the Kings Bay Plowshare activists. An international petition to dismiss the charges against the activists includes the Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mairead Maguire, Bishop John Stowe of Lexington, Ky., and Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu of Cape Town, South Africa, among its signatories.

Princeton alum Leo Schiff ’83 broke into a military facility in Rhode Island in October 1984 to disarm nuclear warheads as part of the “Plowshares” civil disobedience movement. He and three others were sentenced to a year in prison for the act.
