My fan art for Jack-of-the-box by Brom 🔥
Cockatoos are amazing animals, but not so amazing as pets.
Some Cockatoos can live to be over 100 years old.
Moluccan Cockatoos screams can hit 135 dB. In comparison, a jet engine hits 150 dB at take off.
They commonly suffer from plucking and self-harm, which does not happen in the wild.
You do not want to get bit by one. I speak from experience.
Biting is common and seemingly at random.
Some can destroy a $50 wood toy in under 30 minutes.
Even with toys and proper enrichment, they’ll probably chew on your walls, furniture, and everything you love.
The bigger the cage, the better... which they might be able to break out of because they’re heckin’ smart.
Cockatoos can become violent towards other Cockatoos, even ones they’ve paired off with for years.
They're very very very hard to re-home.
“Jack pushed open the lid of his box and peered about the dark, dusty gloom. Where am I? Toys he hadn’t seen for years lay scattered about like discarded rags. A cold terror seized his heart. Holy crap! I’m in the Underbed!
Suddenly he recalled, with a chillingly clarity, Thomas calling him a little kid’s toy.
Sure the boy’s ten years old now, Jack reasoned, a swell of panic tightening his chest. I know that he might be outgrowing some of his toys. But not...me? “
Plucker: Brom
Still have a lot to learn about shading, though I’m pleased to have actually finished this one!
Brom’s Jack
Just a few other neat books I got to shuffle around tonight. The first one goes WAY back to my childhood.
This is Watson the Hawkhead. As you can see, he is a very nakey boy. I am his third home. He was a rehome from Craigslist and had a previous home before that where his life wasn't the best. He came to his second home plucked and thankfully, has not plucked since. That was a while ago and obviously his follicles are damaged to the point of most likely never growing back. He is a pretty happy guy though. Shy, but happy. He eats anything, so he easily changed his diet to a more varied and fresh/healthy one. He loves to just have someone in the same room as him to click and whistle with. Not too interested in toys, no matter the variety, but I've seen a bit of progress from him. He is very much scared of hands and if he sees you reaching towards the cage door, he will instantly start to panic. Not sure what his past in his first home was like to cause this (his second home was fine). I really hope he wasn't abused. After 3 weeks of owning him and working with him, I was able to get him out if the cage and handle him. I handle him every day now and I've made so much progress with him. He is so sweet and VERY gentle, which for the usually hotheaded temperaments of Hawkheads, was incredibly surprising! He loves to look up at you and reach in for a kiss. He is a cutey. Just wanted to share him with ya'll.
I know Gracie’s tired when she assumes the position…
