you blinked a few times, bringing yourself back to focusing on your notes in front of you.
cramming review for a midterm during lunch wasn’t necessarily on your high school bucket list, yet here you were.
perhaps if you hadn’t put off studying for weeks, you wouldn’t be here, stressed in an almost empty classroom when you were supposed to be having lunch.
you could hear the sound of minho munching on some chips echoing off the classroom walls as he paced through the rows of desks.
you’d told him to have lunch without you, but he’d insisted on “fulfilling his boyfriend duties” and staying with you.
a part of him probably wished he was outside, in the fresh air, away from the dusty classroom, but he had made the commitment, and he had to stick with it.
he pulled up a chair and sat across from you at your desk, watching your face intently as you tried to focus on your work.
“y/n.” he whispered.
you ignored him, flipping your study guide to review the back side.
“y/nn,” he whined, resting his forehead on the desk, some of his hair covering your paper.
you pushed his forehead up with your palm, and he slumped back in his seat for a second before sitting up straight again.
he pressed a chip up against your mouth, repeatedly poking between your top and bottom lip until you opened your mouth.
“y/n, honey, you need to eat.”
“no, i need to stud—“
you were cut off by minho pushing the chip into your mouth as you spoke, and you shot him a glare as you chewed roughly before looking back at your paper.
he laughed to himself as he stood up, feeling accomplished.
“if you don’t eat, you’re for sure going to fail! you’ll be too hungry to even think, and your stomach will be speaking to you during the test, ‘y/nnnnnnn, feed meeeeee’ and then you won’t be able to focus and then—“
“minho. please.”
he apologized softly, making an action of zipping his lips as he moved to stand behind you, massaging your shoulders rather roughly before proceeding to put another chip in your mouth and leaving again.
you heard him go to the front, look out the door into the hallways, snoop around the teacher’s desk, and quickly doodle on the whiteboard before making his way to the back of the room.
of course, he made sure to put another chip in your mouth when he walked past you to admire the posters on the classroom’s back wall. then he came to sit at the desk next to you.
he rested his head on the desk, using his arm as a cushion as he turned his head to the side to look at you.
you were grateful for him accompanying you and feeding you, knowing how bored he was not doing anything when he could’ve been enjoying his break.
“you look insanely attractive when you study,” he muttered, still looking at you.
you scoffed, but suddenly felt self conscious as you glanced at him, his hair highlighted by the light coming from the window behind him.
“no, i’m serious! smart people are sexy, y’know!”
you let out a laugh in embarrassment, and he laughed to himself as you used your hand to hide your face from him.
the laughter died down rather quickly, and you went back to studying and making quick notes to remember.
you heard minho move around the room again, followed by the squeaking of dry erase markers on the whiteboard.
he got bored again, and moved to stand behind you, watching over your head as you continued studying. he reached his hands to your front, resting his wrists on your shoulders as his fingers fiddled with the necklace he’d given you for your birthday a few months prior.
“y/n, look up.”
“min, i need to study…”
“please? i won’t bother you after this. i pinkie promise.”
he ran his hands through your hair, and you sighed as you craned your neck to look up at him. you groaned a little, feeling your back stretch against the metal school chair.
you had to blink a few times to bring him into focus, your eyes having been so used to staring closely at words on a page.
“i wanna try something–” he laughed softly. “you look cute when you’re blinking like that.”
you looked up at him with a puzzled look on your face, wondering why he was acting excessively sweet all of a sudden.
“thanks, can i…”
you dropped your head to go back to studying, until you felt his cold hands cup your cheeks and tilt your head back again.
“bro, what the hell?”
minho gasped. “don’t bro me! i’m your boyfriend! the love of your life! your soulmate!”
you rolled your eyes. “whatever, whatever. what are you gonna do?”
“oh, yeah! close your eyes.”
you closed your eyes and rested your head against his stomach as you waited in anticipation for a few seconds, wondering what he was going to do.
before you knew it, you felt minho’s familiar pair of lips on yours, but something was different. they were… upside down?
it all clicked, and you laughed to yourself at how cheesy he was being.
he kissed with uncertainty, not taking a lead like he usually did, as if he was carefully gauging your reaction.
it was a strange sensation, feeling something so familiar suddenly feel so foreign.
the two of you got the hang of it, your hands reaching up to gently rest over his, which were still resting on either side of your face.
although he was upside down, you felt him smile into the kiss as you fell into a comfortable pace and he brushed his fingers against your jaw.
he pulled away, kissing your forehead before letting you go completely and stepping away.
“okay, thank you for your time! also, lunch ends in less than a minute, you might want to pack up now.”
as if on cue, the bell rang and signaled the end of lunch. he smiled widely, observing the dazed expression on your face as your fingers lingered over your lips.
“minho, you are going to be the death of me…” you muttered to yourself, shoving your things into your backpack.

hey besties it’s finals week next week for me T_T hopefully this is a good pick-me-up for y’all too <3 good luck on finals!!
───── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ─────
if your phone went off one more time, you were going to kill it.
or more specifically, you were going to kill the boyfriend of yours who was making your phone go off.
holding your breath, you firmly pressed your hand against your phone, in an attempt to keep any extra attention off of you. if you stayed extremely still, maybe your professor wouldn’t notice your phone had gone off yet again and just focus on the student giving their final presentation.
yet he still shot you a disapproving glare, to which you shot back an awkward smile as an apology.
you flipped your phone over to look at the heap of notifications, all from minho.
guess where i am
outside your class :o surprise!
you should come out to see me
aren’t you bored?
you’re just listening to presentations anyway
you’re totally bored you probably want to see me more right right
so you should come out to see me :))
i’ll give you a good luck kiss :))
what if i said i brought snacks :))))
would you come out and see me then :)))))
you shook your head to yourself and clicked the power button once to shut the screen off, then looked back up at the powerpoint on the projector screen.
until you felt your table rumble… again.
you averted your eyes to your lap, feeling your ears burn red. you didn’t dare to look back up after that, especially because your phone buzzed at least three more times before the student even advanced to their next powerpoint slide.
you were going to see minho after class ended in an hour anyway; couldn’t he wait until then?
maybe you were just too irresistible, and you would’ve gladly taken that compliment—except that was exactly what minho would’ve said about himself if you had answered those texts.
that little shit. he was lucky he’s cute.
once you heard the student mutter a ‘thank you’ with a sigh of relief at the end, you finally got the courage to look up. the professor seemed to forget all about the incident as he scribbled on a piece of paper. it helped that your phone didn’t go off at all for the last minute or two of the presentation, so you let yourself relax.
“thank you, yuna,” the professor said. “seonghwa, are you ready—”
the door opened, and everyone’s heads turned at the movement.
you did the same, and froze when you registered a familiar head of purple hair.
oh no.
the professor looked up from his clipboard and peered over his glasses. “may i help you?”
minho looked at him, his mouth slightly agape. “oh no, sorry…” he then locked eyes with you from across the room. “wrong class, my bad! sorry!” he rambled, then left as fast as he came.
he did not.
your professor watched you with an annoyed look on his face as you excused yourself and hurried out of the room.
once the door was shut, minho was waiting for you outside with a smug grin on his face.
“what do you think you’re doing?!”
he didn’t answer, only placing a chaste kiss on your lips, pulling away before you could process what was happening.
“what— minho i’m in class i’m supposed to give my presentation after the next person and it’s my final—”
“i know, i know… i’m here to wish you luck!” he smiled over-enthusiastically.
you rolled your eyes; you knew him too well to believe that. “you would’ve just texted. why are you here?”
his smile dropped into a small pout as his shoulder slumped. “okay, i was bored and i was um… passing by, yeah? so i thought i’d say hi! also, i did text. you just ignored me.”
“i wasn’t answering your texts ‘cause i’ll be marked down if i’m disruptive! and now i can’t go back in ‘cause the next person already started their presentation, happy?”
“and what if i am?” he asked, a cheeky smile on his face as he leaned against the wall.
you furrowed your eyebrows, glowering at him unamused.
“hey, cheer up! you’re stuck with me for a while now, isn’t that better than some boring presentation?”
you just huffed, crossing your arms and leaning against the wall as well, trying to keep a stoic expression.
“also i’m just saying, you weren’t being disruptive. i was. and i don’t have this class, so you can’t be marked down for it.”
lightheartedly, you scoffed and rolled your eyes. “that makes zero sense.”
“it makes perfect sense!” he smiled at you. “if you think about it— oh, you got a little something right there— i was the one who disrupted class. your grades will be fine.”
minho stood in front of you, adjusting your collar and brushing imaginary dust off your shoulders. your eyes shifted from his exaggerated yet concentrated gaze, to his hands, and back to his eyes. he fixed your hair, tucking a few strands behind your ear as he stifled an embarrassed laugh, and you let out a chuckle of your own.
“now you’re ready!” he mumbled, stepping back from you quickly and returning to your side to hide his flushed cheeks.
you kept your gaze focused on your flustered boyfriend, and a small smirk made its way onto your face. “aw, is someone blushing?” you said, poking his side to tease him.
minho let out a small whine, lightly pushing your hands away in protest.
“i’m not blushing! it’s the lighting, i’m serious. you look like you’re blushing right now. are you blushing? i think you’re just reflecting on me to hide the fact that i made you blush. don’t you have a presentation in a few minutes?”
“alright, alright, sheesh!” you played along, copying his tone before peering in your classroom through the classroom door window.
the student at the front of the room was on what looked like the conclusion slide of his presentation, so you did have to go back in soon.
you turned back to minho, trying to hide the frown that wanted to slip out.
“you don’t wanna go back, do you?” he said.
you sighed but didn’t respond. of course he could read you like a book.
“i can’t say i blame you, who would want to be doing a presentation? also,” he smirked, “i’m way more irresistible.”
and there it was.
you shook your head and rolled your eyes, playing off your blush as you turned back to the door. “wow, you made that way easier!” you said sarcastically.
“wait no no no!”
you turned around as he lightly grabbed your wrist and pulled you back.
“one more kiss?”
“minho, i have to—”
“i know, i know! but he’s not done yet, and i never got a goodbye kiss.”
before you could retaliate, he pulled you close and placed a short kiss on your lips. he wrapped his hands around your waist and leaned back to look at you.
he pressed his lips together into a thin smile. “one more, consider it your good luck kiss!”
you rolled your eyes as your hands rested on his shoulders. “now you’re just making excuses to kiss me.”
“do you want good luck or not?” he muttered, before pressing his lips on yours again. a small smile spread across your mouth as your lips moved together briefly before pulling away.
“you’re so clingy today…” you mumbled, the two of you still close to one another.
“what? i’m always like this, what are you on?” his voice went at least two octaves higher, over-exaggerating his question.
you heard muffled applause as you were about to make a comeback, and minho stepped back, gently pushing you off of him.
“oh look, presentation time!” he said, feigning disappointment.
you looked at him unamused again, and he held back a giggle.
“it’s your turn, right? go, go! fighting!” he made a shooing motion with his hands, leading you to the door.
“wait but—”
you turned before you opened the door, suddenly remembering what minho promised you earlier.
the boy raised an eyebrow at you. “yes?”
you simply held your hand out palm-up, looking at him expectantly.
minho just stared back blankly, glancing at your hand once before smacking it lightly with his.
you squinted at him, confusion and a hint of disgust grazing your features. “wh– that’s not what i meant–”
“then what does…” he mimicked your gesture, down to your body’s stance, “mean?”
“minho, the snacks!”
for a second, he looked at you as if you were the craziest person to walk the earth. his eyes glazed over your face, trying to remember what the hell you were talking about.
then it hit him, and you could tell by the small gasp he made, his lips forming a small o.
“ohhhh! the snacks! yeah, i brought them.”
“yeah, can i have some–”
“you did.”
you shook your head. “um, no i didn’t–”
“me.”
you stared at him in puzzlement, taken aback. “what?”
“i promised snacks, and i let you have the snacks—me! i’m the snack.”
your face dropped, your lips fighting the urge to curve into a smile. you should’ve known it was too good to be true.
“oh my god, i hate you,” you huffed out lightheartedly, and you turned on your heel. “byeeee~”
“good luck!” minho shouted behind you, giggling as he blew you a kiss, a shameless smirk on his face.
“yeah yeah!” you said, and rolled your eyes once more before going inside, ready to get this presentation over with.
at least you got your good luck kiss.
as for minho, after faking you out with no food, maybe later he’ll wish he got a good luck kiss, too.

you wiped the dust off of a box you'd gotten from the attic, and you grimaced at the feeling of dust on your hand. bad idea.
you turned around and wiped your hand on jeongin’s back. the boy spun around, a look of betrayal on his face. “what was that?”
“i had dust on my hand.” you shrugged.
he rolled his eyes, muttering a ‘whatever’ and turned back around. “do you remember the secret language we had back in middle school?”
you shook your head as you racked your brain for any memory of a secret language.
“well, it was less of a language and more for passing notes…”
he handed you a paper that looked like it had been folded and unfolded millions of times. you handled it gently, not wanting it to rip at the seams.
scanning over the paper of coded symbols matched to their letter in the alphabet jogged your memory, and it all came back in bits and pieces.
“oh my god, i completely forgot about this…” you looked up in happiness at jeongin, being hit with a wave of nostalgia as you realized just how long the two of you had known each other.
“me too, me too…” he had more papers in his hand, all varying in size. “you wanna decode these? i think they’re from high school and middle school.”
“oh…” you made a face, not really wanting to relive your old school notes. but as long as it was in the past… “sure, why not?”
he beamed, and the two of you scrambled around jeongin’s house to get pens and papers.
the two of you sat across from each other on his bed, dividing the notes among yourselves and getting to work on decoding. you cringed with each letter you translated, your face heating up in embarrassment, and there was no one to blame but yourself.
you went through your set of letters relatively quickly, just wanting to get it over with (and beat jeongin…) and you sat back against the wall, watching jeongin finish his last few words.
jeongin finished and sat next to you against the wall. he extended his legs, and his feet hung off of the bed. it was only then you realized his room looked much smaller than you’d remembered. maybe it was because the two of you had grown so much since you’d last been here.
you cringed at the notes the two of you had written each other, any feeling of nostalgia being washed away by another wave of embarrassment at your past self.
“why are these so…”
“bad?”
“i think ‘bad’ is an understatement, y/n. i mean, look at this one.”
jeongin pulled out one of the index cards he decoded and the piece of scratch paper that matched. he pointed at a line on the card, trying to hold back his giggles as he recited the translation. “that says, ‘omg i was walking behind lia and she was telling her friend she went up a bra size!’” he paused to mimic the ‘:O’ you drew in after the exclamation point.
you wanted to shrivel up inside, especially when you remembered exactly who lia was—jeongin’s 7th-grade crush. “okay that’s eno—”
“‘i can’t believe this,’” he continued, ignoring your protests. “‘she’s going to have boys all over her! i’ve been the same size since i was in 5th grade, no one is ever gonna love me. i know she’s a year above us but still… >:(’”
he stopped reading, furrowing his brows and pouting his lips at you, copying your drawing at the end of the note before bursting into laughter.
you felt the tips of your ears burn red, and you buried your face in your hands. you groaned out of embarrassment, letting your body fall against jeongin’s shoulder.
jeongin took a few deep breaths to calm himself down and let out a chuckle, immediately wrapping his arm around you as he rubbed your back.
he stayed quiet, occasionally patting your back and mumbling a half-sarcastic “there, there” as you tried to compose yourself.
after you got out all your embarrassment for your 12-year-old self for whatever that was, you removed yourself from the comfort of jeongin’s shoulder.
wait, comfort?
and the note you wrote seemed so… jealous? even if it was a long time ago, why would you—
oh, crap.
even when you sat back up, the boy kept his arm around your shoulders as he smirked at you, almost cockily. “how does it feel being the more embarrassing of the two of us?”
you glared at him before shoving his arm off of you.
“shut up, jeongin.”
"i don't know if i want to do this."
"jeongin, we did not walk all the way across campus just for you to chicken out."
he didn't respond, simply staring at the candygram booth a few feet in front of him.
"just go send your telegram or whatever, we don't have all day." you pushed him forward slightly, and he turned his head to glare at you.
he huffed. "it's a candygram, dumbass."
you didn't respond, simply watching him as he asked for one ‘candygram' from the student body leader at the table.
he was handed a pink slip of paper and directed over to another table nearby. he took a pen and addressed the candygram.
you couldn't help but wonder who he was sending it to, so you slowly walked up behind him, trying not to make any noise.
"i can hear you, y’know.”
you laughed at your failed attempt of snooping, before backing up. "why can't i know who you're sending it to?" you whined.
"because, if this goes bad, it'll be embarrassing. i'd rather tell you if it goes well after. choose a candy?"
you chose a lollipop, handing it to him he pulled a small folded piece of paper out of his pocket, stapling both of the items to the small pink paper.
he handed the now-complete candy gram back to the student body leader, thanking them before swiftly turning on his heel to leave.
you ran after him, confused. "what was that? what's on the paper?"
he furrowed his brows at you. "i didn't tell you?"
you shook your head, and he formed an o with his lips. "oh, i'm telling someone i like them. that's what was on the paper."
"oh? jeongin, that's great!"
it wasn't great. you'd rather die than admit it aloud, but you were jealous. a pang of jealousy struck your heart when he said those words, but what were you to do about it?
"i sent it anonymously, though," he admitted sheepishly. your shoulders relaxed ever so slightly, hoping that whoever received his candygram wouldn't recognize his handwriting.
you laughed it off, though, making sure not to show any signs of jealousy. "what a pussy. i would've made you sign your name, if i’d known."
if you had known, you would've set that pink piece of paper on fire.
"are you okay?" jeongin looked at you, a mix of disgust and concern in his features. "your eye is doing the…. the thing.”
you looked at him briefly before looking forward again. "my eye isn't doing…. a thing.”
he scoffed, "yes, it is. it's twitching and you can't focus anywhere, are you okay?"
"I'm fine!" you interjected, just a bit louder than you'd intended.
jeongin widened his eyes in surprise, and you couldn't help but feel a pang of guilt. "damn, okay okay my bad, i guess.”
"yeah, your bad! don't you have a class in ten minutes you need to get to?" you crossed your arms and kept your eyes glued to the ground as you word-vomited, spitting out the first excuse you could think of to end the conversation. a lame excuse, yeah, but it seemed to work.
"yeah, and so do you, you weirdo, in case you forgot we have that class together." he grabbed your hand and walked in the direction of the building where your english 101 class was.
you stumbled a bit before matching his pace, avoiding looking at him or your now-intertwined hands.
"you sure you're okay?" he asked once more.
you nodded, your eyes still locked on the cement below you. "yeah. i'm okay."
"if this is about the candygram, you know you can technically buy one for yourself, right? it’s pretty easy to fudge.”
you scoffed. "a little late for that, don't you think?"
in hindsight, maybe that wasn't such a bad idea.
ah, valentine's day.
a day of love, chocolates, and... horny young adult couples.
for a fairly large university, you expected to spend less of your energy trying to dodge them, but they were in every area on campus you stepped foot in—especially the dorms.
you hated it.
you dragged yourself back to your dorm, after being in a shitty mood all day. maybe if you had a boyfriend, you wouldn't hate this day as much.
but it's whatever. less money for you to spend, you figured.
you stopped on the first floor to pick up your mail. you yawned as you stuck the key in the hole and opened your mailbox, but abruptly stopped when you saw a pink slip hovering above the rest of your mail, supported by a piece of candy.
your heart fluttered as you realized you'd been sent a candygram. you reached to grab it, and when you pulled it out the end of the paper sagged from the weight of the lollipop stapled to it.
you flipped it over to remove the candy, and you almost dropped the paper in your hand. attached between the lollipop and the candygram was a folded piece of paper, and you immediately knew who it was from.
inhaling sharply, you flipped over the paper again to check the handwriting, and only confirmed your suspicion. jeongin had sent you that candygram.
you grabbed the rest of your mail in a hurry before scrambling up the flight of stairs and down the hall to your dorm.
you tugged the lollipop you had chosen just a few days prior, unwrapping it and putting it in your mouth to keep you somewhat occupied. your hands shook as your fingers grazed over the white slip of paper, folded so precisely that it only confirmed your hypothesis again.
slowly unfolding it, your jitters were immediately shut down when you saw obscure shapes and dots arranged in neat lines across the paper.
"that sneaky brat," you mumbled to yourself, seeing the extra attached paper with handwritten code on it. it had been weeks since that visit back home, when you and jeongin found your old notes with that goddamn code.
this was going to be interesting.
you took a look at the one of the notes that came with the lollipop… well, the one uncoded one.
y/n,
by the time you're reading this, you'll know who i am. but where was the excitement in just a plain letter? get to work!
love,
you know who ♡
you set the key down on your desk alongside the (very long) coded letter as you got a pen and piece of scratch paper.
you grumbled to yourself as you got to work, rewriting the letter in characters you could read. each letter you decoded formed a word, stringing into sentences that only made your nerves build up inside of you again.
when you finished, you couldn't bring yourself to read what you'd written in full. you took a deep breath, running your hands through your hair as you looked up at the ceiling. you knew what the letter said—you had just unraveled the mystery yourself. but it would be different this time, reading it without any pauses.
readjusting your position, you picked up the letter and took a deep breath to compose yourself as much as possible as you read.
i'm sorry you had to find out this way, but i don't think we should be friends anymore…
you would’ve felt your heart sink to your stomach, if you hadn’t already had an idea of what was next.
…we should be lovers instead.
my y/n,
since we were little kids, you’ve been everything i needed and more. we grew up together, and i hope we can grow old together. i couldn’t imagine being with anyone else. it’s always been you.
i love you.
you read it once, then immediately set the paper down and put your hand over your mouth, leaning back in your seat. a wave of emotions swept over you as you leaned forward and read it again and again, your heart always fluttering whenever you read those last three words.
then, as if a lightswitch clicked in your brain, you began scouring your desk drawer for a small piece of paper and grabbing a pen, scribbling on a scratch sheet of paper to make sure it worked.
you grabbed the code that jeongin included in his candygram, and you prepared to write a letter of your own. you wrote two words; ‘dear jeongin,’ and stopped. what were you supposed to say? you’d never been one to write letters. birthday cards were always an open and shut ‘happy birthday, hope you have an amazing day!’
so how were you supposed to write a whole love letter?
you groaned, sitting back in your seat again. you ran through different possible phrases and letters, but none of them seemed right.
you stopped after several minutes to take a break. the more you thought about what to write, the more muddled your mind became, so you needed to step back.
you threw yourself onto your bed and exhaled loudly. were you overthinking this? was it supposed to frustrate you to the point where your head began to pound?
did jeongin feel the same way when he wrote his?
you got up momentarily to grab his letter from your desk, before flopping back on your bed again. holding the paper gently in your hands, you held it up above you and your eyes glazed over the letters imprinted on the paper. it looked so simple, the way his words were so concise yet so elegant, seamed together neatly in a way only jeongin could do.
for all you knew, the right words came to him perfectly.
you let out a sigh after a minute of rereading his letter before setting the paper aside. you rolled off your bed and sat back at your desk.
you took a deep breath, and began writing whatever you felt as a response to his letter.
my jeongin,
since we were little kids, you’ve also been my everything. i guess deep down, i’ve always known that you were the one for me. all the memories we’ve made together only make me want more, too.
i’ll be all yours for as long as you want, as long as you’ll have me.
i love you.
y/n.
you sat back, a hand over your mouth at how naturally the words flowed out onto the paper. you felt giddy all of a sudden, like you were back in 7th grade, passing notes to one another in the back of math class.
you folded it, put your letter along with the code in a small envelope, and sealed it. it was now or never.
outside of jeongin’s dorm, you lifted your hand to knock on the door, but hesitated. what if he didn’t want to see you? what if this was all some sick joke? but he’d never do that to you, right?
maybe he wasn’t even home, and you could just do this later. that would be really easy. half of you wanted that to be true, the other half just wanting to get this over with.
all of a sudden, you found yourself second guessing yourself. did you really want to do this? well, you have to. but not really. but you couldn’t just say nothing…
you lowered your hand, but couldn’t bring yourself to walk away. you took a deep breath, and made a plan in your head.
you knock on the door, jeongin opens it, you hand him the letter, and get the hell out.
easier said than done, but might as well.
you knocked on the door, before nervously taking a small step back and shifting your weight from one foot to another. you looked at the ground in anticipation.
the door swung open, and your eyes met jeongin’s, but you quickly looked away. the two of you stood like deer caught in headlights, and you knew that he knew why you were there.
“this is for you.”
you raised the envelope in your hand, and you couldn’t bring yourself to look at him. you glued your eyes on the wall next to his door as you mumbled a goodbye, turning to go back home.
“wait, y/n?”
this was definitely not part of the plan.
you turned back around, and jeongin was leaning out of the doorframe, your envelope still in one of his hands.
“do you want to stay, and we can talk?”
it took everything in your power not to check him out as he ran a hand through his hair, nervously pressing his lips together.
you just smiled and nodded, afraid of what your voice might sound like if you spoke too soon.
he held the door open for you as you walked in, shutting it behind the both of you as he walked past you taking your shoes off.
he went into the kitchen, and you followed, awkwardly standing a few feet away from him as you watched him. you’d been here before several times, but the atmosphere was different this time.
you nervously leaned against the counter as you watched him open the envelope. he pulled out the code first and immediately set it down on the counter with a small smile, knowing what he was in for.
then he pulled out the actual letter, and you watched him, amazed at how he read the letter without needing to refer to the key.
the small smile he had on his face grew into an ear to ear grin, reading it over and over again as he laughed softly to himself. the tips of his ears burned red, but he played it off as he turned to face you, leaning back on the kitchen counter.
“as long as i’ll have you?” he questioned, the letter still in hand.
it seemed as though all the blood in your body rushed to your face, all thanks to jeongin quoting the last line from your letter.
“if you invited me in just to tease me, i might as well just leave.” you said, a small smile on your face.
he took a step closer to you. “who said i wanted you to leave?”
“well…”
he smiled lopsidedly at you, and you were at a loss for words for the second time that day. it was so embarrassing; being wrapped around his finger like this.
“as long as i’ll have you… wow. that’s a big commitment you made.”
jeongin laughed softly and used one finger to tilt your head up to look at him. it was only then it truly hit you just how close he had gotten to you.
your faces were mere inches apart, and your breath hitched as your eyes locked with his. he searched your eyes for any sign of hesitation, before his gaze flickered slightly down to the bottom of your face.
you’d never been this close to him, and you studied his features as he looked back at your eyes, and the corners of your lips curled up into a small smile.
he leaned forward, giving you just enough time to pull away if you wanted, but when you didn’t, he crashed his lips onto yours.
you gasped in surprise, standing up straight to reach his height and he mumbled a ‘sorry’ against your lips before snaking a hand around your waist to pull you closer.
your hands reached around to the back of his neck, your fingertips touching the uneven ends of his hair, which had grown just long enough for you to play with as he kissed you.
he slowly pulled away after a few seconds, his lips lingering against yours, never wanting to lose contact.
he smiled sweetly at you. “i know i said it already in my letter, but… i love you.”
you smiled, happy to hear those three little words coming from him. “i love you, too.”
“…it’s a lot more embarrassing when you say it out loud,” jeongin laughed softly, his hand coming up to cover his face.
“aww, are you blushing? do i make you flustered?” you teased, relishing in your ability to make him embarrassed.
he shook his head and pulled you into a hug, hiding his face from you as he rested his head on your shoulder. you couldn’t help but melt at his reaction as you wrapped your arms around him.
to his disdain, however, all the love and adoration you had for him would never stop you from taking another jab at him.
“you know, it’s funny how you made fun of me for my letter when you wrote yours first.”
jeongin let out a whine at this, making you snicker.
you pulled back a little to look at him. “how does it feel to be the cheesier one out of the two of us?”
he hugged you closer so he could hide his face again. “shut upppp,” he whined once more, and you could hear the little pout he was undoubtedly wearing as he spoke.
you just smiled and tightened your arms around him, snuggling into his hold.
“besides,” he added, burying his face in your shoulder, “it was worth it.”
you chuckled lightly. “you’re just proving my point, sweetheart.”

“hey, i’m sorry i’m late.”
chan set his phone down on what you assumed was probably a pillow, propping it at such an angle so you two could see each other while he laid down on his bed.
you smiled lightly, shaking your head at the screen. “it’s okay, love.”
you knew going long-distance was going to be hard. chan and his bandmates had left home a few weeks ago to go on tour—a world tour, in fact. you were all for it, of course, maybe even more excited than the group themselves.
but to say that you knew exactly what you were signing up for when you dropped everyone off at the airport was a huge understatement.
going from seeing each other everyday to facetiming each other once a week (twice on a good week) nearly broke you. you had lost count of how often you’d go days on end without hearing from chan, only for him to quickly text you days later that he forgot to reply. all too familiar was the sound of his voicemail, telling you to leave a message after the tone. one of the only times you could hear his voice on some days.
perhaps the worst part of chan being away was the sudden lack of hugs. ever since you two started dating, he always made sure to shower you with them. morning hugs from behind while you cooked breakfast. side hugs whenever you waited in line at starbucks, a hand gently resting on your waist as you leaned into his shoulder. comforting arms wrapped around you, pulling you into his chest whenever you were about to burst into tears… oh, how badly you needed those so many times within the last few weeks.
and of course, the goodnight hugs.
oh, the goodnight hugs… the ones that would always end in full-on cuddles within a matter of minutes. you used to complain when he wanted to snuggle with you at night, saying it was “too hot” and uncomfortable, even during winter nights. but now, after realizing just how cold his side of the bed was without him there to fill it, just how eerily quiet the room was without him incessantly bugging you for ‘just five minutes, please?’, you craved those cuddles more than ever.
you understood he was busy. he knew you were busy, too, often occupied with work and college, which, on top of clashing time zones, made planning time together all the more difficult. despite your busy schedules, you two managed to make it work, promising to facetime at least once a week. sometimes you would plan to eat a meal together. other times, chan would stream a movie on his laptop and screen-share with you so you could watch together.
but sometimes, you and chan just facetimed and… talked. before chan left for tour, you two often lied in bed together but refused to sleep, instead talking about whatever came to your minds. events from your day, stories from the past, thoughts about the future, random late-night thoughts… anything was fair game. you two would just talk late into the night as you faced each other, speaking in hushed voices and giggling quietly even though you two lived together. there was never a dull moment between you two, no matter how late it was, or how damn well you knew you’d regret staying up the following morning.
out of the kinds of virtual dates you two had, the ones where you two just talked over facetime were your favorites. probably because those were the dates that reminded you of home the most.
lots of things changed once chan left for tour, but those facetime dates where you just talked late into the night were one of the few things that didn’t.
tonight was no exception. chan happened to finish his schedule early—a rarity for him, especially during tours. the first thing he did after he got to the hotel and got ready for bed was call you, eager to see your face for the first time in days. what a perfect way to end his night.
he smiled at you cutely, scrunching up his nose before making a silly face at the camera. you giggled as he readjusted himself and fixed his hair, still damp from the shower he took before he called you.
“so, how was work?” you asked.
“oh, you won’t believe what minho did today!”
you propped your head up against your hand, listening intently to the story chan recalled from his afternoon. “and when jisung came out of the shower, he was screaming that his hair turned purple!” you were over the moon, finally being able to hear his voice for longer than a voicemail greeting.
you listened intently, clinging on to every word he said like it would be the last time. you watched him with stars in your eyes as he rambled on and on for hours.
the nights you and chan would spend talking never stopped when he left for tour. however, they had to end at some point.
you had forgotten that he was in a different time zone until he began showing it. he yawned once, twice, and countless times more. his eyes drooped as he became overcome by sleepiness. his words began meshing together, his voice down to a low whisper.
“baby, what time is it there? you should go to sleep.”
“umm, 3:25? i will soon, i want to talk to youu…”
“you’re barely awake, channie. i can wait a little longer.”
he pouted, shifting a bit under his blanket. “but i don’t want to wait…” he mumbled sleepily.
“i can wait, i promise. you have a show tomorrow, we can talk right before you go to work, yeah?”
that only made him pout more, and he grumbled another complaint under his breath.
it was quiet for another minute, and you watched as chan grew sleepier. “i should go and let you sleep,” you said softly, about to press the red button to end the call.
“nooo,” he whined, peeling one eye open to look at you.
“chan…”
“just five more minutes?” he stuck his bottom lip out in another pout. “please?”
you chuckled a little. “of course. i’ll be right back though,” you said, excusing yourself to go to the bathroom after chan mumbled a small “m’kay” in response.
you went and freshened up, then came back after a few minutes.
“i’m back— oh.”
one look at the screen revealed that chan had fallen asleep in the short time you were gone. you laughed softly to yourself as he dozed off, a piece of stray hair dropping in front of his eye as little snores escaped his mouth.
your chuckles quickly died down as you watched your boyfriend with a loving smile. he looked so peaceful, you didn’t dare to disturb him as he entered dreamland. he deserved the rest, with how much he did for his team, and how much he did for you.
you waited a couple more minutes before you decided it was a good time to hang up. you smiled at the boy once more, your finger hovering over the ‘end call’ button.
“get some rest, baby. i love you,” you said softly, and you pressed the red button.
you knew it was going to be hard. and you knew that soon enough, chan would be back home, snuggled up in bed to both of your hearts’ desires, as he told you all his tour stories as if it was the first time.
but for now, moments like these were more than enough.

“what are you doing?” you could practically hear the subtle tilt of jeongin’s head as he stifled a giggle, watching you stick your head out the window.
you opened your eyes for a moment, staring up at a small fluffy cloud dancing above you. “i’m basking,” you said, retreating your head out of the window and back into the moving vehicle. “well, i was. wasn’t it obvious?”
your best friend failed to hold back his laugh this time, his eyebrows threaded together in amusement. “sure, and you looked like a dog!” he pointed up, bringing your attention to the window above the two of you. “you know there’s a reason for that, right?”
the bright instrumentals of “rocketeer” by far east movement filled the car as you thought of a response. you could only utter out an “oh… right,” and you moved your hair in front of your ears to hide that they were turning red.
jeongin snickered at you as he shook his head. he reached up to retract the sunroof, allowing the warm sunlight to flood into the back row where you both sat. he clicked off his seatbelt and stood up, and gestured for you to follow. “come up here, this is way more fun!”
smiling at the boy, whose arms were outstretched outside the vehicle, you closed your side window and removed your seatbelt.
“if you two hurt yourselves up there, i’m leaving you at the next rest stop,” minho chastised from the driver’s seat.
“we won’t!” you rolled your eyes playfully, standing up next to jeongin.
immediately, you felt a cool breeze caress your cheeks as the car traveled down a slope. you closed your eyes, spreading your arms out in a similar manner as jeongin, allowing yourself to relax. jeongin was right; this was much more comfortable than your original method.
after a while, you propped an elbow against the roof of the car, your chin resting on the palm of your hand. letting your gaze wander, you took in your surroundings. rich, green leaves of palm trees swayed under the summer breeze, a shadow of one occasionally flicking past the car as you drove past one. you could spot the ocean line from miles away, its gentle waves seemed to sparkle under the clear sky. it could not get more perfect than this.
actually, it could.
you found yourself stealing glances at the boy beside you, and he quickly became the star of the show for you. you admired the way the summer sun kissed his skin, and hit his eyes in such a way that you could count the flecks of hazel within them. the breeze flowed through his blonde hair almost flawlessly, as if he was the dashing prince in a disney movie. a blissful smile spread across his face as he closed his eyes, taking in the utter beauty of the day. meanwhile, you took in the utter beauty of him.
the breeze suddenly hit you both harder, causing jeongin to let out a yelp and scrunch up his face. chuckling awkwardly, he ran his hands through his hair in an attempt to fix it. you did the same, taking a minute to regain your composure.
he smiled at you sheepishly. “i wasn’t expecting that.”
you nodded. “me too.”
you continued to stand out the sunroof together in silence, you occasionally stealing a glance at jeongin. at some point, you must have let your gaze linger a moment too long, because he noticed you staring and smiled back affectionately.
you turned away in embarrassment, hiding your reddening cheeks from him. “sorry,” you mumbled.
jeongin chuckled, feeling a blush of his own creep up his face.
another silence filled the air around you two. you tried stealing one more glance after a minute, and he happened to look at you at the same time.
“enjoying the view?” jeongin teased, nudging your side.
you felt your cheeks heat up again and you rolled your eyes, “you wish.”
he smiled shyly, scratching at the back of his neck. “you know what’d be fun?” he said in an attempt to hide his embarrassment.
you hummed in response.
“what if i climbed on top of the car?” he said jokingly, sending you a mischievous grin.
playing along, you stared at him challengingly. “if you fall off, it’s your fault.”
jeongin giggled, holding his hands up in surrender. “i’m kidding, i’m kidding!”
little did you know, he already did fall.
fall for you.

call from chan.
"oh my god, finally!" you muttered to yourself.
pursing your lips in agitation, you answered the phone, bringing the receiver up to your ear. you had been trying to call him for five minutes after you had gotten yourself lost, aimlessly wandering around the vast, green park.
you and your group of friends agreed to meet there for a valentine's day white elephant gift exchange right after school. the second the last bell of the day rang through the halls, you made your way out the doors and to the park across the street from your school. however, this was your first time going there, and you had no idea how big it actually was.
why chan didn't just meet you outside your classroom and walk with you there instead of saying "just meet me there, you'll be fine," you would never understand. sure, he seemed a bit.…. on edge all day for reasons he refused to tell you, but your last period was literally two rooms away from his. come on.
"hello?" you said.
"hey, where are you?"
you resisted the urge to scoff at the aussie's question. "damn, i don't know! i've been walking around for ten minutes trying to find you guy—”
"TAKE THAT BACK!!" you heard vaguely through the line in one ear, and echo from the distance in the other.
you snapped your head towards the source of the yelling: two teenage boys chasing each other around the playground area, and another six watching and laughing in amusement.
“…never mind," you said, hanging up.
you jogged your way over to your friends as hyunjin and changbin tackled each other into the grass.
felix, who sat cross-legged on top of the picnic table, was the first to see you, waving at you as you arrived. "you made it!" he smiled widely, stretching his arms out for a hug, which you gladly reciprocated.
"i told you you'd be fine!" chan said from his spot behind felix on the picnic table's actual seat. you huffed lightly, muttering a 'yeah, yeah' as you stepped over to give him a side hug.
"hey, where's my hug?" jisung called out from the seesaw, his end dipped all the way down because no one sat at the other side to balance out his weight.
you turned your head to him, and even from far away you could see him wiggling his eyebrows playfully at you.
your eyes rolled to the back of your head and you turned back to chan and felix, jisung yelling a few complaints your way.
"where do i put this?" you asked, holding up your gift, enclosed in a white bag with red hearts.
"i got it!" felix chirped, taking the gift from your hands and placing it in the pile next to him. "just wait a bit, we'll start in a few minutes once we figure everything out."
you simply nodded and walked off, stepping past where minho and seungmin laid in a starfish position on the picnic blanket, to where hyunjin and changbin were, still bickering and rolling around in the grass.
you couldn't make out anything they said, but all their arguing stopped once they caught sight of you.
"hi, y/n!" changbin said, practically shoving hyunjin off of him.
"OW! so mean," hyunjin said, giving the shorter boy a sour look.
changbin ignored this, giving you an awkward smile as he got up and dusted himself off. "i-ignore him, he's crazy.
you smiled back, letting out a chuckle, your eyes shifting to the ground. "believe me, i know.”
hyunjin's sour glares at changbin only intensified, his jaw dropping in exasperation.
changbin stepped closer to you, still ignoring hyunjin. you did the same, meeting him halfway and wrapping your arms around him in a hug.
you couldn't help but smile when you felt him hug you back, almost melting in his warm, strong embrace.
"oh my god, changbin," hyunjin said, staring at the two of you in disgust.
you let the hug linger a bit longer than you should've before you reluctantly let go, changbin following your actions. you smiled shyly at him, and you swore his cheeks had a pink tint to them that wasn't there before. he gave you a small smile in return, his gaze dropping to his shoes.
you couldn't hold eye contact either, your eyes instead glancing everywhere besides the boy in front of you. you saw something in the corner of your eye and turned your head toward jisung, who had a look of betrayal spread across his features.
"and you couldn't give me a hug?!" he threw his hands up in exasperation.
"unlike you, changbin's nice to me!" you shot back, holding back a laugh as jisung shook his head at you in disapproval.
"he has a whole class with you and i only see you at lunch!"
"that’s not my problem!"
you shook your head and rolled your eyes. as changbin ran off to the seesaw, and hyunjin to the picnic blanket, you made your way to the swingset, taking a seat on the empty swing next to jeongin.
without even saying a word, jeongin gave you a knowing look.
"what?" you said, eyeing him suspiciously.
he only raised an eyebrow at you and smirked. "am i that nice to you?"
you felt the tips of your ears heat up. "oh, fuck off."
"what?! it's a simple question, i didn't say anything!" he shrugged way too innocently, kicking his feet back and forth to gain momentum on the swing.
“well, you said it suggestively…” you muttered.
"was it suggestive? or was i just pointing out how you're obviously head over heels for—”
"i think that's enough!!" you laughed loudly and awkwardly to drown out the sound of his name coming from jeongin's lips, and jeongin just laughed at your panicked state.
"i wouldn't have actually said his name, y'know."
you hummed in response, rolling your eyes. you watched some of your friends gossip, and others run and play around, and started kicking your legs out of boredom, gaining momentum as you swung back and forth.
you couldn't help but find yourself watching changbin more than the others. not because he was cute or your favorite or anything, but because he couldn't seem to sit still—more than usual, actually.
…okay, maybe also because he was cute. and really sweet.
but that's besides the point.
the point was that chan needed help rounding up the kids for white elephant, and he was failing miserably at it.
he looked at you desperately, as if to beg for help. you laughed, before sharply whistling.
he mouthed a 'thank you' and called everyone over.
"alright, maybe doing this at a park wasn't a good idea, i admit that. we still have to actually do the white elephant, though.”
the kids all settled down, scattering themselves across the picnic mat and seesaw, the swingset already occupied by you and jeongin.
chan sat back down at the picnic table felix was sitting on and explained the process of deciding who would pick when; he would draw the names out of his beanie (they had forgotten a hat), and whoever's name was drawn would choose their gift.
you slowly stopped swinging as you watched chan stick his hand into the beanie, pulling it out a few seconds later along with a small slip of paper.
felix peeked over, glancing at the name on the paper. "changbin, you pick first!"
"coming!"
your gaze fell back to the seesaw, where changbin and jisung were pushing off the ground to lift each other's ends of the seesaw off the ground, keeping them a bit too entertained.
as changbin's end of the seesaw teetered down, he suddenly leapt off the equipment and ran off to the picnic table, causing jisung's end of the seesaw to slam on the ground.
"YOU MADE ME HIT MY ASS," jisung cried out, loud enough to make a couple bystanders turn their heads.
"THERE ARE MORE IMPORTANT MATTERS THAN YOUR FLAT ASS," changbin screamed back from the picnic table.
"MY ASS IS NOT FLAT."
changbin ignored the vounger boy as he plucked a gift from the pile next to felix. he made his way back to the picnic blanket and placed the present on his lap, gently hugging it close to him.
you couldn't help but smile endearingly at him. at least, until you caught jeongin smiling at you obnoxiously, mimicking you.
"oh my god, fuck off!" you said, lightly smacking his chest as a red blush stained your cheeks.
"you're so easy to piss off," he laughed, more than amused at your flustered state.
you just scoffed, unable to come up with a remark in return until the moment had passed and you had to let it go.
by now, there were four people left who needed to pick, and chan seemed to be really struggling with the beanie. you watched as he kept pulling out a slip of paper, only to throw it back in and mix the names up, then do it all over again.
still, you eyed him suspiciously. he'd been doing this for about three minutes straight now, way longer than necessary… it couldn't have been that hard, could it? it didn't help his case that felix began to quietly argue with him.
you got up from the swing and walked over to the picnic table. "chan, you know you can take out the names that have already been called… right?"
chan tore his eyes away from his beanie, looking at you like a deer in headlights. "o-oh..." he awkwardly chuckled. “right, y-yeah, of course! why didn't i think of that…”
he began to dig through the papers in the beanie, almost hesitantly taking out some of the names. felix shifted a bit on top of the table, awkwardly grinning as he mumbled something at the other aussie.
"oh my god, chan, you're taking forever!" hyunjin said with his mouth full.
"i'm trying!" chan huffed, sending something of a warning glance to hyunjin.
you squinted a little. "are you okay?"
"yeah yeah yeah i'm fine!" chan forced out a chuckle. "i’m fine, i swear!"
you glanced over at the other boys. changbin grumbled something as he buried his head in his hands. jisung sat awkwardly at the seesaw, cheeks puffed out as he pursed his lips together. hyunjin, minho, and seungmin gave each other a knowing but uneasy look, hyunjin slowly taking another bite of his food; and jeongin just looked away when you made eye contact with him.
chan was not fine. and the others' reactions weren't easing your mind.
maybe something was up.
you moved so you were standing next to chan as he took out one more name. "did you get everyone?"
"yeah yeah," he replied a little too quickly, " got them all, i think."
"oookay, so…”
you gave chan a look as if to say 'pull another name, preferably now,' and he stuck his hand into the beanie.
he drew his hand out after a few seconds and unfolded the piece of paper he grabbed. he skimmed the paper before muttering something under his breath and quickly putting it back, only making you more suspicious.
fortunately for you, you caught a glimpse of what it said.
"wait wasn't that my name—”
"no!" chan and felix cut you off in unison.
okay, that was weird. "um, it looked like my name—”
felix inserted himself in between you and chan, preventing you from peeking into that stupid beanie. "it was minho's!"
you tightened your eyebrows. "my name isn't even close to minho's—”
"um, i accidentally wrote him in twice! my bad," chan said, giving you an awkward chuckle and an even more awkward smile. the younger aussie did the same, throwing in a peace sign which didn’t help at all.
something was definitely up.
you gave the pair an incredulous look before shaking your head and stepping back. they weren’t going to let up anytime soon, so arguing more would’ve been pointless.
you plopped in an empty spot on the now-messy picnic blanket, and waited for your turn.
after two more turns, your name still hadn’t been called. the only other person besides you who didn’t have a present was seungmin.
if this was any other game of white elephant, you wouldn’t have cared. but you knew you didn’t hallucinate the very very fishy way chan and felix were acting.
you propped your head on your hand as you watched the two of them quietly bicker, again, not knowing how else to react other than sighing heavily.
this went on for a good minute or so before you stood up and walked over to the picnic table again. as you got closer to them, you were able to make out bits of what they were saying.
“i thought we agreed on …”
“i know but if … guaranteed that …”
“but he knows … it’s fine we can just—”
yeah, that’s not suspicious at all.
“chan,” you spoke, startling the both of them, “there’s literally only two people left, i’ll just go—”
“WAIT BUT YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW WHO I PULLED YET.”
“BECAUSE YOU KEEP PUTTING THE PAPER BACK! unless you pulled minho again,” you spat back, grumbling that last part.
“OH MY GOD JUST LET HER CHOOSE,” changbin screamed at chan and felix, his head buried in his hands.
“shut your mouth you WHORE,” jisung piped up, “YOU WANTED TO MAKE HER GO LAST.”
you snapped your head to look at changbin. “you WHAT?”
you jumped at the sudden shouts at jisung, who suddenly straightened his posture and pointed an accusing finger at changbin, attempting to deflect the attention off of him.
their yells merged into a jumble of words you couldn't make out, except for the frequent “DUMBASS!” and “we were SO CLOSE” directed at jisung, who by now had given up on defending himself and started opening a bag of chips.
changbin made eye contact with you, and his demeanor changed. “i would explain if you guys shut the fuck up maybe?!”
the members hushed one by one, but not without mumbling one last scolding line at jisung.
“…thank you,” changbin said, his voice softening as he turned to face you. “y/n… i can explain.”
“explain this?!” minho looked at the younger boy incredulously. “how are you gonna explain without–”
“i can try if you let me!” changbin snapped at minho, who put his hands up in surrender.
“bitch MOVE! you’re terrible at explaining,” jisung said, scrambling to his feet.
“‘bitch?’ YOU ruined the plan! i’ll explain, it’s fi—”
despite changbin’s protests, jisung scurried over to you, stopping right in front of you. “y/n, i can explain.”
you looked jisung up and down, your face twisting as if you’d just had a taste of something sour. he gently pulled you back to the empty spot on the picnic blanket, and gestured for you to sit down. you did so hesitantly, feeling the other boys’ eyes fall on you.
meanwhile, changbin looked like he was ready to kick the puffy cheeked boy’s ass.
“my dearest y/n…” jisung kneeled in front of you and met you at eye level. he took your hands in both of his, which only befuddled you further. he glanced at changbin momentarily and awkwardly laughed off the piercing daggers being sent his way. “you see…”
you looked at him expectantly. “i see…?”
“changbin right here,” he removed a hand from yours to gesture at his now red-faced friend—whether he was red from embarrassment or anger was unclear. “changbin is a very sweet and considerate man…”
the corners of your mouth tilted upward, but you quickly caught yourself and licked your lips once to regain your composure. “i– i’m aware…”
changbin took three big strides forward, and his hand connected to the crown of jisung’s head, making jisung cry out. “OW!! THAT WAS A COMPLIMENT!”
“JUST GET TO THE POINT.”
“i WAS! DAMN.” jisung turned back to you, placing his free hand back on yours. “anyway, sweet, sweet changbin suggested you go last because…” he leaned closer, as if he was telling you confidential information.
however, his voice—which increased in volume, if anything—seemed to suggest otherwise.
“because… he wanted to give seungmin a chance, isn’t that so generous of our changbin?”
your face twisted even more. “...what?”
by the looks of it, seungmin didn’t seem too amused, either. “excuse me?”
jisung giggled awkwardly, his eyes darting from seungmin to changbin before landing back on you and continuing. “heh, you see, y/n, seungmin, here, has not had the best luck with valentines. and seungmin is,” he scratched at the back of his neck, “seungmin is a great guy! and we don’t want to cause more stress for seungmin, you know? getting no bitches— let me tell you— has its effects on a man!”
seungmin whipped his head at jisung, an offended look on his face. “BITCH?!”
jisung flinched as seungmin’s hand flew at him, stopping just inches away from his face before retracting. he barely was able to dodge the taller boy practically pouncing at him.
“HEY! I’M TRYING TO HELP!”
the overlapping shouts began once again, the (unfortunately) familiar noise pounding at your eardrums as you were almost literally right in the middle of it this time.
plugging your ears with your fingers, you stepped carefully past the bickering zone and to the picnic table. chan and felix had left, and were now in said bickering zone to give their two cents, leaving the two remaining gifts unattended.
you peered over your shoulder. the boys seemed fairly… occupied. good. the more occupied, the better.
perfect time to grab a gift and—
“WAIT NO Y/N Y/N Y/N—”
oh, come on.
your eyes landed on jisung as he broke free from seungmin’s hold, almost slipping and falling as he ran over to you, waving his hands frantically as if to beg you to stop.
your face fell and you spun on your heel, hands falling limp at your sides. “oh my god, what?”
jisung stood there in an odd posture, the beanie of names in his hands. “um… can you hold off for, like, three minutes?” he awkwardly laughed. “the guys are kind of pissed at me—”
“good! i am too!” you cut him off sharply, grabbing the beanie in his hands and throwing it on his face, leaving him in shock.
you flashed him a phony smile before hurling yourself to the table, jisung not very far behind you.
in one swift motion, you took a box and ripped it open, setting aside whatever was in the box on the table. you looked up and aimed for a split second before throwing the box with all your might, hitting jisung square in the stomach. he dramatically bent over, falling to the ground and rolling as he wrapped his arms over his torso.
you stifled a laugh as you turned around to see a cream-colored teddy bear sitting upright. the smile permanently stitched on its face greeted you warmly, like it was offering you the fake rose that sat in front of it.
you reached out and took the bear, sitting down at the picnic bench and putting it in your lap so it faced you. you smiled as you ran your hand over the plushie, your fingers grazing the soft fur. it was the kind of gift that only a certain someone would know to give you, and immediately you understood why they were all so uptight about you receiving it.
a wave of anticipation came over the whole group, any side bickering being silenced to watch you figure out your gift.
your heart pounded as you flipped over each of its paws, looking for the sewed patch with the words “press me!” in some kind of cheap font.
you felt the patch on its right paw, and immediately pressed it. the silence was broken by an all too familiar voice speaking through the bear.
“y/nnnn~” changbin’s voice rang from the teddy bear. you smiled, imagining that little grin on his face whenever he said something cutely.
“i… ilikeyou.”
you blinked. did he just say…
“um… yeah,” the boy awkwardly cleared his throat.
before you could register it fully, another loud but familiar voice cut through the air.
“BOOOOOO, THAT WASN’T THE SCRIPT.”
you snickered at the new voice. jisung. he was definitely peering over changbin’s shoulder as he picked out your gift in all aspects, literally and metaphorically.
no wonder why he was the pushiest out of everyone.
you heard changbin let out a whine that quickly dissolved into a short but messy string of complaints.
at least, until another voice interjected in, cutting him short.
“hey, it’s okay, just say it! she’ll love it,” the third voice said, then you heard two light, encouraging pats on (presumably) changbin’s back. chan.
“o-okay,” you could imagine changbin nodding, and he cleared his throat again. “y/n, i…” he took a deep breath.
“i love you.”
that you registered right away.
you almost dropped the teddy bear out of your hands. your mouth hung slightly agape, and you felt your stomach twist into knots.
“YEAH! HE LOVES YOU, MAN!” you barely registered jisung squeezing in one final comment before the voice message ended.
your mind was spinning a mile a minute. you almost didn’t want to believe it. did he…
yep. he said it.
“y/n…”
that voice you knew and loved made you lose your train of thought, if you could even call it one.
you turned your head. changbin approached you cautiously, unsure of how to read your initial reaction.
soon he stood in front of you, bouncing on the balls of his feet as he looked around nervously.
you gave him a small but sweet smile. “hi.”
“h-hey.” he smiled back, his eyes struggling to meet yours. it was then that you noticed the pink blush dusted across his cheeks that made another appearance.
he was so cute.
“y/n, i-i’m really sorry about all this,” he began to explain. “i know white elephant is supposed to be random, but, um, i thought it would be a good idea to just get a gift for you instead— and um— then i was like, ‘well what if someone grabs it before you can?’ so i told the boys to make sure you go last so you can— i know it sounds bad but— i swear i was going somewhere with this um—”
you stood up and set the bear on the table, laughing lightly and shaking your head. “changbin…”
“look i know it sounds like a stupid ide— yeah?”
his eyes averted away from his shoes for a moment to look at you. he studied your features to gauge your reaction. nothing looked like a sign of rejection, at least he hoped. this wasn’t so bad so far.
you felt the corners of your lips tug back, glancing down at your own shoes for a second before meeting his gaze.
“i love you t—”
you didn’t need to finish your sentence for changbin to know that the feeling was mutual.
excitedly, he leaned forward, catching you by surprise.
you wrapped your arms around him, the boys erupting in cheers and whoops around the two of you gently swaying back and forth in each other’s arms, your head resting on his shoulder. he pulled his head back to look at you, his arms still around your waist. “can… may i…?”
you smiled and closed the little distance between the two of you yourself. his breath hitched for a split second before melting into your touch. your hand reached around to the back of his neck, your fingertips brushing the ends of his hair. your other hand rested on his chest as he pulled you closer to him by your waist.
the cheers from the boys turned into gagging noises and exclamations of ‘get a room!’, making you smile into the kiss, never wanting the moment to end. but you pulled away, clasping your hands behind changbin’s neck, holding his forehead to yours as you smiled in content.
“so, i guess it didn’t turn out so bad after all, right?” jisung laughed awkwardly, testing the waters.
changbin glared at him, and he immediately started apologizing profusely.
after exchanging a look with changbin, you looked back at jisung, who smiled at you two cheesily after spewing out the last of his apologies. “so… forgive me, y/n?”
you scoffed lightly. “yeah, yeah.”
his eyes lit up. “yay! can i get my hug now? i mean, just saying, but i was the one who pushed changbin to say it and i think that deserves a rewar—”
“well, technically it was chan—” you interjected.
“wait i wasn’t done let me finish—”
“oh my god, just come here!”
you gave changbin a lighthearted yet apologetic look as you stepped away from him. you wrapped your arms around the quokka-like boy, who shot an almost-sarcastic grin at changbin from over your shoulder, making him roll his eyes.
jisung let go after a few seconds and sauntered away, just happy he got his hug from his good friend.
while his back was turned, hyunjin reached into the picnic basket and tossed a small red object at changbin. once changbin caught it, you stepped closer to him to see what it was: a cherry tomato.
you two shot hyunjin a questioning look, and he only cocked his head to point at jisung, who was humming quietly to himself, his back still turned to you and the rest of the group.
your lips formed an o shape, an evil grin threatening to tug at them. you gestured to the basket then yourself, and hyunjin gladly threw you a cherry tomato of your own.
you and changbin gave each other a knowing look. you both looked back at jisung, who was now humming and dancing in place blissfully several feet away from the group, aimed your tomatoes, and chucked them at him—yours hitting him square in the back, and changbin’s at the back of the head.
“wh-” the boy turned around, his jaw dropped in betrayal as you two tried to hold back a laugh. “HEY! what was that for?!”
“for fun!” you giggled.
jisung shook his head in disapproval. “after all i’ve done for you, y/n… and what about you?!” he said, pointing at changbin.
“that’s for annoying my girlfriend!” changbin spat back, and you couldn't help but look down at the ground as your cheeks heated up.
jisung could only shake his head once more. “two minutes in and you’re already whipped for her…” he sighed dramatically. “this is what i get for playing wingman!”
“love you!”
“yeah yeah, and you’re welcome for getting you and your new girlfriend together!”
