Imagine going to a place. No, not your home, a different place. Other people are there. They, like you, are there because they want food, but not the food in their homes. Instead, they want someone else to cook the food for them. Then, some of the people return to their homes with the food, while others -- get this -- stay in the place that they don’t live in and eat food near other people.
In 2014, when Tapblaze originally released Good Pizza, Great Pizza, it was a quirky simulation game rooted in a real-world situation. Now, in 2020, for its Switch release, the idea of a “restaurant” is pure science fiction. That usually happens in reverse order.
Good Pizza, Great Pizza is a pretty simple game, and I mean that as a compliment. It’s a quick drop into a comforting routine of taking orders, stretching dough, spreading sauce and cheese, sprinkling toppings, cutting slices, and serving to customers, who then tip you according to how closely you followed their instructions and how quickly you made their pizza. It’s not fast enough to be frantic, it’s not complicated enough to be puzzling, but it’s just enough of both.
Over time, you earn funds to unlock more toppings, which in turn makes the pizza orders more complex, and then people start ordering multiple pizzas. More importantly, you can unlock new decor for your pizzeria, allowing me to live out the dream I never knew I had: owning a pizza shop with a poster of Wayne Campbell holding up a Pizza Hut box on the wall.
Most importantly, there’s a parade of wholesomely quirky customers, starting with the owner of the big pizzeria across the street. He’s enough of a jerk to berate your skills as an “ovenist,” but not such a jerk that he doesn’t act as the tutorial. Between business days, an entirely pizza-themed news show catches you up on the events in the city, signing off, of course, with “Good Pizza, Great Pizza.” The writing definitely elevates this game, as does me thinking about pizza constantly.
I received a review copy on Switch, and found the controls kind of difficult to internalize. Sometimes this is fun, like the challenge of swinging an analog stick around to precisely place pepperoni in a perfect pizza pattern. Sometimes this is frustrating, like helplessly watching my pizza escape off the screen on a conveyor belt as I flailingly attempt to push the right button to move the cursor. I should note, it isn’t so difficult that my 7-year-olds can’t successfully good pizza, great pizza. I also tried the mobile version, and it was totally fine!
The closing paragraph of a review is a weird place to put this personal behind the scenes note, but here it is anyway. I spent several weeks fiddling with an empty page trying to figure out what to say about this game. I knew I wanted to write it up; it’s a nice cozy game and I’m glad to have it on my Switch. PM Studios, a company I normally associate with hardcore rhythm games, made a good call picking this game up.
Part of my inefficiency can be attributed to pandemic brain, of course. I just move more slowly now in all matters not related to wiping down food containers with antibacterial wipes. But it’s more... I don’t have a lot of analysis to offer about Good Pizza, Great Pizza. It’s a nice bit of comfort food, which I swear I wrote before I realized I was doing like a pizza joke. I’m not trying to end this article with a button like that, y’all.
