‘ it was so scary. when i woke up, it seemed like it was still in the room with me.’ - Mim (Remember - he knows the Bogeyman~!)

sometimes, limbo exists in their bones. ravenous, it thrums in the space between their lungs and feeds on shallow exhales. with nothing left but ten times their weight in secrets–crushing, bruising, strangling–they lie half-awake in a cold sweat. (drowning, withering.) buried beneath fingernails, dreams have never felt so far away; the impossible, never distant enough. in the hours between twilight and dawn, safety is a myth best shared between school children, not those with blood on their hands, beneath their tongues.
tonight, limbo breathes in the blue-green hue of the television. it beats to the tune of rustling plastic and tumbling crumbs, the melody soft as sand on the windward shore. albeit subdued, the threats remain lodged between layers of skin and secrete menacing whispers through veins. here, limbo dismantles them cell by cell by cell, imperceptibly, languidly. they aren’t so naive as to ignore their own inevitable demise, but temporary distractions are vestiges of hope in this vacuum, grace for the undeserved.
“you’re safe here. i promise.”
cocooned in blankets, he feels half his age but clings to the burdens of someone twice as old. on the television before them, penciled in grins and pre-recorded laughter fill the momentary silence. rife with restlessness, apgujeong pulsates wildly beyond the polished windows, but there is only the smooth click! of a soda tab to be heard here. silence--so hauntingly familiar--has never been this welcome. sickly sweet treats are more of a tarp than a mask thrown over the tang of iron and grief. never concealing completely, but just enough.
“i come here to hide when nothing else works.” he smiles--weary, but reassuring--and draws the blanket tighter around his shoulders. “do you still feel it here?”
