he's literally only put a single video out teasing the lore for his base but i NEED to make theories or i'll die so! joelish beans posting time B) everything under the cut because i love rambling

as far as i can tell the lore stuff is only in the last quarter of the video but idk maybe his intros will start to have hints?? no way to tell right now lol

ACTUALLY one thing i didn't consider until rewatching said last quarter--joel mentions near the beginning of the video that either someone is pranking him or the fallen leaves regrow. im like 99% sure they don't unless somehow the chunks at his base reloaded and glitched? but idk how thatd work. so either someone is pranking him and it just so happens to potentially fall in line with his lore (that i'll get into) OR he's self-reporting and he intends to replace some of the leaves each video to give himself a motive. he's kind of insane as we all know <3 so either is plausible imo.

ok onto the stuff i noticed! most of it is obvious but i want to lay out all the info given to go through it more efficiently.

gathering slime in the resource montage, then not using any slime blocks in the build (visibly)

stressing that the cacti are "for the dye, of course" (this could just be normal joel speech but given how he stresses a lot of other stuff in this part, it stood out as odd to me)

materials in the chest at the end of the montage include a sticky piston, 23 redstone, and a comparator.

speaking of the chests, the first one shows all the glass and wool, ordered by color, but all the green and some light blue are missing. the second chest with the piston has them inside, but then when he opens the first chest again he's moved all of the green back into it.

at the start of the build timelapse, he places down the comparator and hides the rest of the redstone extending from it using the hay bales

the theme reveal is, in his words, "everything's okay, and *color*. like, 'everything's okay', and we're gonna use lots of color. i don't want anyone to think i'm weird because *everything's okay*."

for the interior, he hides the comparator behind a chiseled bookshelf, which is sandwiched between a fireplace and a staircase, hiding anything below the floor on the side under the staircase.

"what is a bit weird is the garden outside," pointing out that he's using unnatural blocks like terracotta and amethyst for the garden.

the landmarks in the garden (rainbow, loveseat) he points out but i can't think of anything notable about them lore-wise *yet* aside from him mentioning he's the only one that will be using the loveseat (but again this could just be joel being joel lmao)

when he goes inside, the bookshelf in front of the comparator has been filled with books. there are only chiseled bookshelves in the house, no normal ones, but the one connected to redstone is the only one filled.

the balcony decorations were in the same chest as the piston

when he looks out from the balcony, he stresses that the forest will not be there for much longer. big deforestation theme lol

"seeing as our build is nice and colorful, and everything is fine, we will make sure our outfit screams that as well."

yayyy new joel skin!! the colors are surprisingly muted for the theme which i enjoy, it reminds me a bit of pierrot dolls

the black screen flashing seems to just be to obscure this image, it doesn't repeat enough to be morse code imo but that could be wrong? idk lol

after outro, joel interacts with the bookshelf twice and the piston retracts from under the stairs, where he descends down a hidden ladder.

ok now with all that: analysis time

starting with the images, the misplaced green & blue items could be a color hint, a code, or just a mistake. it's clear already that there's something color-wise going on ofc, both in general and the distortion being green-blue and dark pink. there's two possible codes i can think of at the moment: the number of items corresponding to letters of the alphabet, or to the item name. 24 is more letters than are available in lime stained glass, so it'd more likely be the alphabet. 2 15 3 5 24 = BOCEX. depending on how many encryptions are stacked this could be a caesar cipher, a scramble, a word in reverse, or some combination. OR it could be nothing and i'm reaching lol. the closest word it could be as a caesar puzzle is "resun" so it being a hidden message is unlikely (though him stressing sunshine and rainbows.... coincidence??)

even just the process of showing colors with the green cut out, then cutting to having added them back could be symbolizing him tearing out the environment around his base, only to replace it with non-native moss and unnatural formations of amethyst and terracotta.

as for the distortions near the end, there definitely seems to be emphasis on blue-green and pink. something i'd like to point out is that pink and green are inverses of each other, in terms of visible light. magenta and the more purple-shifted pink (as in not just light red) come from our brains trying to process light past the visible spectrum. pink and purple on a color wheel are in between red and blue, but visible light is a linear spectrum: red has a longer wavelength, and blue-violet has a short wavelength. past blue-violet is invisible ultraviolet light, and before red is invisible infrared light. but we can still see a combination of red and blue light that makes purple and pink, right? to fold the visible spectrum into a circle and connect the ends, our brains average the two wavelengths. normally, this would give us green light. but so much of nature is green already, it wouldn't be helpful for getting information. so our brains invert the averaged light, creating pink and magenta!

joel might have just chosen the green and pink for the distortions as his base colors, or inverted the green and darkened it to get that dark pink distortion, but even if it was a coincidence rather than a hint from light physics, i think it could tie into his base really well with the inversion from nature into something strange/"unnatural"!

i scanned through his profile on namemc and did a reverse image search and i cannot find a single skin that matches the image that flashed during the distortion. if anyone has an idea of what it might be, please add onto this!!

i also immediately got welcome home vibes, not sure if it's part of the inspiration but cool regardless!

NOW my hypothesis:

the main themes for the base to be revealed over time are greenwashing of nature, as in tearing out the ecosystem to replace it with something more "clean/sunshine-y", and joel being "puppeted" by some higher force, maybe a god, concept, entity, corporation, etc.

it's too early right now to have anything beyond concepts for what it'll be about, but i really wanted to make some sort of prediction early on because i'm super interested in how the season goes! i'm also REALLY hoping he plays into the arg style a bit more, i need puzzles and enrichment to survive <3

i can't wait to see how he adds to the lore in the next few episodes!

What Do We Mean by Normal and Pathological Dissociation?

Dissociation is when someone feels separated from their thoughts, feelings, or memories. Sometimes, dissociation is considered a normal reaction to certain situations. Other times, it can be seen as a pathological (or harmful) condition. Although the difference between normal and pathological dissociation is talked about in many research papers, it often isn't clearly explained on its own. As different experts write about it, they use different ways (or “dimensions”) to separate what they call “normal” dissociation from what they call “pathological” dissociation. The following sections highlight some key dimensions that people use to make sense of these two forms of dissociation.

1. Type

Some experts theorize that certain “types” of dissociation are normal, while others are not. For example, research suggests that amnesia (forgetting important parts of an experience), depersonalization (feeling disconnected from oneself), and identity problems (like in DID) are a part of pathological dissociation. In contrast, absorption (losing yourself in a good book or movie) is often seen as normal.

Some researchers also talk about a “dissociative taxon.” A taxon, in this specific context, is a special group of people who show a certain kind of dissociation. (Note that in a broader sense, 'taxon' can refer to any category used for classification, but here it specifically focuses on dissociative features.) If you have this taxon, you might have a dissociative “disorder.” If you do not, you are probably not at risk. In this view, “normal dissociation” is any kind that does not lead to clear mental health problems.

2. Level

Other scientists view dissociation as existing on a continuum (a line that goes from low to high). At one end are mild forms of dissociation, such as absorption. At the other end is structural dissociation, such as DID, which is much more severe. In this way of thinking, what makes dissociation “pathological” is how intense or extreme it is.

3. Timing

In recent years, people have started talking about the terms peritraumatic and posttraumatic in the context of dissociation.

Peritraumatic dissociation is dissociation that happens during or right after a traumatic event. This may be a normal and helpful response at the time, but it can also make someone more likely to develop PTSD.

Posttraumatic dissociation happens after a trauma, sometimes lasting long after the event.

For example, it can be normal to

feel “out of body” right after or during a scary event

have a short time when you notice less pain during a crisis

or experience a kind of “shock” that can make you feel confused or disoriented and cause gaps in your memory right after very distressing news

However, if these experiences continue when there is no current threat, it may become pathological. According to Lisa Butler, dissociative disorders are not considered disorders just because dissociation happens or because it helped someone survive trauma. Instead, they become disorders when severe dissociation and its harmful effects continue long after the traumatic situation is over.

4. Relationship to Defense

Some researchers say that normal dissociation happens when we put all our attention on one thing and block out everything else. For instance, if you are absorbed in a video game and do not hear someone calling your name, that is a normal kind of dissociation.

In pathological dissociation, the blocked memories or feelings might be clearly recorded in the brain but are pushed away on purpose, almost like a defense mechanism. This can cause problems later because these memories and feelings may come back in distressing ways.

5. Frequency

Sometimes people call dissociation “normal” if it happens often in the general population. For example, items that measure absorption on a test (such as the Dissociative Experiences Scale) are common. On the other hand, items that measure amnesia or depersonalization happen less often. Because absorption is more frequent, it is often seen as normal.

6. Purpose

The last way to tell apart normal and pathological dissociation is to look at its purpose. For example, imagine a soldier who ignores the pain of a combat wound just long enough to get to safety. This dissociation helps the soldier survive, so it might be called “normal.” But if the same numbness or lack of awareness shows up in a safer situation (like someone who harms themself because they don't notice their own pain) that might be a “pathological” use of dissociation.

Evolutionary ideas suggest that dissociation can help us:

Protect ourselves by separating out terrible experiences,

Save energy by focusing only on what is necessary, or

Avoid conflict by pushing away thoughts and feelings we cannot face.

When dissociation is used for a helpful reason and does not harm us, it is seen as normal. However, if it is used in an unhealthy way or lasts too long, it can become pathological.
