Why Roots Feel More Like Restraints by Randall Santiago (via youwillforget)
Without ever planning it, we seemed to sprout a future together. Almost as quickly, it withered and decayed. We never spoke of what poisoned the root of us, maybe my musings fertilized with fermented spirits provided clarity.
I was once a wildflower whose refusal to be picked was challenged by a man who waited patiently to harvest. It made me wary of those who see my beauty. I knew what at first looks like a blessing can twist itself into a curse.
I grew from the remains of a broken hearth watching my father work himself into the ground trying to provide kindling for a woman made of fire whose warmth he craved yet extinguished. Somewhere along the way I realized just because you can build a home amidst chaos doesn’t mean you should.

Dresses like a white girl
All this and more makes me wanna fight her
Light skinned Latina
Fits in nowhere
Lightest among some
Darkest among others
Wishes she was as beautiful as her mother
Understands more Spanish than she speaks
Wants to sew her lips shut to hide her teeth
So worried about what other people think
That she’s stepped into quicksand
As she worries on, she sinks
