“They fled-” The Komendant grimaces before continuing. “They left an encampment of exiles.”
“They’re exiles?”
“They’re pargrunen. And they’re our responsibility.”
Before Ukaizo, before Sun in Shadow, there is Solace, and the day two boys are brought into the fold.

Ylfa looked at the man sleeping at her side, her expression blank, hands fisted into the blanket in her lap. Her gaze grew more unfocused the longer she stared, until her vision blurred entirely and she had to shake herself to clear it.
Something about the situation felt sickeningly familiar — 'sickening?' she wondered, turning her head to one side. Forwyn had been a proficient enough lover, and he hadn't asked for any declarations of love or devotion. The night honestly couldn't have gone better.
Still. Something made Ylfa's skin itch, and she knew sleep wouldn't come easy. She got dressed and exited her tent, where she was greeted by the cool night air and the scent of smoke on the wind. She turned to look in the direction of Yenwood field, where just hours prior the battle with Lord Gathbin had taken place.
For a moment the smoke seemed much closer, her nostrils filling with the acrid scent of burning bodies, and Ylfa closed her eyes only to see a different battlefield in a different nation. Despite the slight chill in the air, she felt sweat pooling at the base of her neck, phantom warmth from unseen fires burning at her back. She squeezed her eyes shut tighter, trying to ward away the memory.
"Hey," a voice came from behind her, and her eyes flew open. She turned around to see Edér, a vague look of concern on his face. At least, she thought it was concern— thinking was difficult with her mind stuck somewhere else.
She swallowed hard, hoping she didn't look as off-kilter as she felt. "What are you doing out here?"
"Couldn't stop thinkin' about it," Edér said, and Ylfa tilted her head.
"Oh, the battle?" she asked, and would have laughed if her throat hadn't felt so dry. "Yeah. It was mes—"
"Him fuckin' you," Edér interrupted her, and she felt her senses snap back into focus, a sensation not unlike getting flicked in the forehead.
She blinked at him. "Pardon?" she asked, certain she had misheard him. Or— no, those words had come from him, but she'd heard him say something else, too.
She cursed inwardly as the realization clicked into place; without the proper hold on her senses, her mind had been reaching for anything nearby to grasp, and she'd unwittingly read Edér's mind.
But he'd still thought that, even if he'd said something more like 'Forwyn in your tent'. Really, it was a matter of semantics; the intent was more or less the same. Her incredulous stare was justified, either way.
Edér shrank away slightly, feeling heat rush up from his neck to his cheeks. "I mean— not like I was picturin' anything in great detail, but…" he trailed off, glancing over at her tent. Ylfa noted how his expression soured, and she couldn't help but match his frown.
"Exactly what business do you think that is of yours, Edér?" she asked, crossing her arms.
He flinched, blinking down at her with almost owlish surprise. "Well— you said before…" he trailed off, looking down at the ground as he lost confidence.
"You could not have been more blatantly disinterested when I approached you," Ylfa said, shaking her head. "Try again."
"I just don't want you gettin' hurt, is all," Edér said, without lifting his gaze.
Ylfa made a face. "You know very well I'm not harmless."
Edér met her gaze, the concern from before returning to his eyes. "I don't mean like that."
Ylfa furrowed her brow, confused, and when the implication of his statement hit her, the hollow pain of it nearly stole her breath. "Right," she let out a scoff, "because no human man could ever actually be interested in me. That would be unfathomable."
"Ylfa—"
"You know what, Edér, how about you keep this shit to yourself in the future," she cut him off, lifting a hand to quiet him. "Actually, how about you just—" she paused, trying to control the anger flickering across her face, "just don't talk to me for a while, okay?"
"I didn't mean to say anything wrong," Edér insisted, even as she started to walk back towards her tent. He followed after, but had to step backwards when she whipped back around.
"I don't care what you meant, Edér! Fuck's sake, you are so thick. Do you think that's— that's flattering?" she asked, gesturing widely with one hand. "Hanging around outside my tent, wondering about how I'm getting fucked?"
Edér's mouth worked through several shapes, and he shook his head. "I didn't say— shit, you were in my head?"
Ylfa gave him a tired look, fury still simmering in her eyes. "Do you honestly think you have any right to feel scandalized right now?" she asked, and then glanced away. "I didn't mean to. But you were thinking about it."
His lips formed a line. "I didn't mean to." He said, and at her look of disbelief, put a hand over his heart. "I mean it! Hell, you wanna know how I really feel?" he asked, and took a deep breath, letting it out slow. "Then go ahead. Use your mind-readin', you'll see."
Ylfa felt her senses reach for Edér in response to his open invitation, and clamped down on the temptation hard enough to make herself physically recoil. "Absolutely not."
Edér seemed to deflate. "But if you give it a chance…look, I don't know why—" he sighed in frustration, running a hand over his hair. "Maybe you could figure out what I can't."
Ylfa felt tears burning her eyes, and set her jaw. "If you don't respect me enough to be honest with me, why should I care how you feel?"
He made a face. "Oh, 'cause if I'd come out the gate with 'did Forwyn treat you right' you woulda liked that."
She drew back, surprised at the vitriol in his tone, and then straightened her spine. "It would have gone over better than expressing doubt about the mere existence of my romantic prospects, Edér."
"Fuck," he sighed, and nodded. "Yeah, okay, it sounds bad when you put it that way—"
"It sounded bad the way you put it," Ylfa cut in.
Edér lifted both his hands in a peaceful gesture. "Just…do your thing, and put us both out of this misery."
"Both of us?" Ylfa asked, raising an eyebrow. "That's optimistic." The flicker of pain that ran across Edér's face was enough to stab regret into her heart, but she shook her head. "I'm not giving you an easy out. Not after that. You figure out what you wanna say, or don't," she shrugged, "that's up to you. But do it somewhere that isn't here."
—
Edér watched as Ylfa turned and walked back into her tent, catching a glimpse of a sleeping Forwyn when she ducked inside, and clenched his fists at his sides.
Why was he still in there? That had been the only reason Edér had been stationed outside — he wasn't close enough to hear anything, wasn't tryin' to be a creep, he'd just been waiting for the marshal to leave, but then he hadn't. So his mind had wandered as he'd waited.
And now he was left reeling, something burning in his chest at the thought of them spending the whole night together. Ylfa had looked so disgusted at his initial suggestion to see how he felt; the way she'd pulled back had made his stomach drop, so he knew he shouldn't have pressed the issue, but he couldn't help it. He really didn't know what he was feeling, but he knew it was about her, that he felt something for her, and if she'd just looked…
He sighed again. It was selfish, waiting until she'd found someone else to say something — but he hadn't had any clue what was brewing inside him until he'd caught himself glaring at the marshal some days ago, while they'd been going over battle strategies.
The way Forwyn had openly stared at the Watcher had made Edér's blood boil. Wasn't anything wrong with the way he was lookin', either, and yet he still found himself wanting to gouge the other man's eyes.
Edér shook his head, and started to head back towards his own tent, accepting that at least for the time being, he was fucked.
—
Ylfa once again stared at a sleeping Forwyn, suddenly resentful of the man's presence. She would have liked the time alone to think, or curse, or cry— and instead, all she could do was lie down, turning Edér's words over and over in her head.
'Maybe you could figure out what I can't'.
She sighed quietly, closing her eyes. Frustrated as she was, and as justified as she believed her anger to be, asking for a clear line in the sand had never really helped her in the past, either. Was she punishing both of them for Edér being— what, bad with words?
No, it was more than that. He needed to be responsible for his own feelings.
Even so, she had hurt him because he'd hurt her, not because she didn't want to know how he felt. Her mind had ached to reach into his, and the effort it had taken to resist that urge had not gone unnoticed.
And now she had to wait for him to figure out what to say to her — if he even wanted to. After that disaster, she might be waiting forever.

HOME
Stranded on a planet and in the cold, you find yourself needing some reassurance from Poe.
Warnings: nothing much, a couple of angsty lines and a feeble threat of hypothermia.
The planet was cold. It was the kind of cold that slithers into your bones and settles there, keeping you hostage. You were hugging yourself in a corner of the safehouse - if the dismantled place you were huddling in could even be called that - while thoughts of the mission you had been sent on ran through your brain. You couldn't believe how soon and how quickly it had all gone to shit. One minute you were gathering information and the next you had to run for your life, cover blown. It was frustrating, you were so tired of losing to them.
A shiver ran down your back and you clutched the blanket you had over your shoulders a little bit closer.
Anger was brewing under your skin. Huffing, you started to pace - or better, to limp. Your ankle was throbbing but it was so cold that you could barely feel any pain.
"We're too far out," the voice of your partner reached your ears, but it felt like you were underwater. "I need to fix this- this mechanical fod before trying to contact base again"
Poe.
Sweet Poe, who had resolutely taken the situation with both hands and immediately started handling it the best he could. Like yourself, he was shivering too, but he was holding on. You suspected it was mostly for you, to keep you both afloat: a typical trait of his self-sacrificing character.
“I cannot believe this-” he muttered under his breath, letting something fall with a clanking sound.
When he realized you hadn't said anything - nor scolded him for letting something possibly important fall - he turned quickly, heart hammering in his chest in fear of having lost you to the temperature. He blinked at your form, standing still as if to check your breathing. Then, he stepped closer and reached for you. “Baby?” he accompanied the sweet word with a hand on your cheek.
You blinked up at him, and frowned. “How the kriff did that happen?” You moved a couple steps away, unable to be still. “We needed those informations-”
He clocked your trembling hands immediately- and the limp. He loved your stubbornness most of the time, but that was not the right moment. “Please, sit down, you're clearly hurting”
“Actually,” you stopped, “I don't feel kriffing shit, It's too cold”
If it were any other moment, he would have laughed. But he knew you and knew what lied under the surface made of sarcasm and anger. You cared. Sometimes, you cared too much.
“Come here” he muttered, softly reaching for you and cradling you close. “I don't know what went wrong, but sometimes it happens,” he paused, “We do the best we can, we move on and we'll get back at them, I know it”
You looked up at Poe, focusing on how pretty he looked all huddled up in his winter clothes.
“Also,” he went on, “Your ankle could be sprained, so stop squirming.” Rolling your eyes, you opened your mouth to reply but he beat you on time, “But I'm no expert on medical things though, I'm usually on the other side of the medical relationship“
He threw you a half smile. He had such a distracting smile.
And he was really good at melting away your anger and anxiety. You let out an amused huff. “I bet you'd be an amazing medic” you paused, “Or at least all the girls would come to you”
Upon hearing your voice devoid of the previous tension, his eyes brightened up.
“Only one girl for me”
A shiver ran down your back, whether for the wind or his words, you didn't know.
You huffed, a soft laugh leaving your lips.
In that moment, you really wanted to tell Poe so many things - mostly that you loved him and couldn't do this without him - but you realized your eyes were stinging. And you were so tired - so so tired - and it was all too much and everything had gone to shit and the Rebellion needed those informations and you just-
“Poe, I just want to go home”
You pushed your head in his chest and sniffed.
Poe knew it then, you weren't just shaking from anger and adrenaline, or because of the freezing cold; you were scared. “I just want to go home” you sniffled, “And I never can, not while we're in this war and we keep on getting backtracked”
He inhaled sharply, heart visibility breaking. His hands cradled your face, making you look at him. His eyes bored into yours. “I promise you, I will bring us home” he paused, “I'll bring you home.” His lips met your forehead. “And until we win, I will be your home.”
“You already are-” you interrupted softly. You didn't mean to make him think any different.
He grinned, clearly having understood what you meant, but went on. “And then we'll go meet my dad-”
“And my parents,” you added.
He nodded, heart mending smile never leaving his beautiful face.
You believed him. There was no one in the whole universe you had more faith in.
Slowly, the silence between you filled with renewed hope. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, but you remembered it then: never lose hope.
And you had Poe to thank for that.
He saw your shoulders relaxing and light coming back to your eyes - and he knew. “I love you,” you confessed.
“I love you too”
A trembling hand reached for his and you leaned forward, cold lips meeting cold lips. It was brief, but it was all you needed.
“Hey” he said when you finally pulled away, lifting your head a bit and searching for your eyes. “Here's what we'll do: I'll sit here and fix that stupid radio and keep you warm” He paused, “And we'll be fine”
He was right. You'd be fine. And if you wanted to go home you had to take one step at a time.
I'm so excited to share this! I'm currently planning and drafting a Storm Trooper!Reader X Poe spy fic and I decided to make a mood board for it! I like how this turned out and it's the first time I made a mood board for any of my fics
Summary: The war against the First Order left the galaxy broken and in desperate need of being helped. Poe Dameron was left like that too.
When the Resistance gets invited by the Princess of Veranda to join her council and help her re-build the galaxy, Poe realizes maybe the Princess was as broken as he is, and maybe they could patch each other up.

Addalah opened her eyes to the feeling of Poe’s fingertips going up and down the exposed skin of her hip, his arm wrapped loosely around her waist and deep, soft breaths coming in and out of his nose.
He was calm.
No lines on his forehead, no eyebrows knitted in the middle, no rambling mouth going a thousand miles an hour. Just peace written all over his face with a small smile displayed on him as he slept. Addalah sighed at the sight, pushing a wild curl that had made its way down to Poe’s face, her fingers taking advantage of the trip to settle between his neck and back.

The plan Poe and Finn had thought of to stop the First Order from growing again was easier said than done: go to Veranda, infiltrate the Palace, find whoever is responsible and capture them. How they were going to make it happen was a mystery for both the Resistance team and Addalah, who would receive eventual updates while trying to accomodate and tend to every single person from Veranda who arrived to the base.
It felt as if it was her final test to become the Queen; with her father recovering at med bay for the past 4 days she had every task on herself, and with Saerah by her side they made sure that everyone had a quarter assigned, a medical check-up and food on their stomachs. A spare bed was placed in Addalah's quarters so Saerah and her could share the room since they were working on the same schedule and quarters were needed for every refugee.

Two days went by without anyone hearing from Poe and Finn. Everyone seemed to be running on autopilot mode while Addalah's body was running on pure anxiety and lack of sleep. How they managed to do that every single day was unbelievable, but still would explain a lot about the Pilot's constant survival mode being activated. Rey joined the rescue team soon after the signals were lost, leaving Addalah shaken up with the promise of returning.
Addalah had stayed glued to the comms, making herself useful as the soldiers who went to Veranda sent status messages, while still waiting to hear back from her friends. Her hands had become faster during the last 48 hours of changing from channel to channel as more news came in: an armed attack at the Palace, multiple bomb detonations in the village, homes destroyed, and people seeking refuge. Everything Addalah had worked to fix in benefit of the entire galaxy for the past 9 months, was now being turned into her own hell in her own home.
